Features

GIMP Portable ScreenshotThe GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. Learn more about the GIMP...

GIMP Portable Background Window and Photoshop Layout

GIMP Portable Extras ScreenshotTwo extras have been released that enhance GIMP Portable: GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout and GIMP Portable Background Window. The Photoshop Layout add-on adjusts GIMP's dock/toolbox to more closely approximate the layout of Adobe Photoshop. The Background Window plugin allows GIMP to occupy a single window. The background plugin does contain known bugs and is unsupported but should still be useful to many users.

GIMP Portable Help 2.4.0

GIMP Portable Help 2.4.0 has also been released. It allows you install the complete GIMP help files into GIMP Portable to make use of the context sensitive help or to use the help files when offline.

New in This Release

GIMP has been updated to 2.4.4. GIMP Portable was enhanced to portablize the GIMP Background Window plugin. Secondary launches of GIMP Portable are now supported as is passing files to GIMP on secondary launches. Numerous speed improvements were made, especially to first launch which is now more than twice as fast in some instances. The launcher and installer were both updated and are now digitally signed as well.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

GIMP Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It's packaged in the PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

I've been waiting for this!

Question - any ideas for a fix for the background issues, or is it just something we'll have to live with?

John T. Haller's picture

As stated, it's unsupported. As is. You're on your own, matey. Unless we can find a solid developer to pick it up. This is mentioned on the plugin page.

As usual, asked before I read everything.

THX a lot for the proggie!
One question - could somebody enlighten me how to change GTK theme in the portable Gimp? The usual way fails - suppose that GTK Theme Chooser makes reference to a location a bit strange for the PortableGimp.
Anybody?

This will really help me! I'm not sure if I'll use the extra's, but it's great that they are available!

I'm going to install this right now Smile

Thanks man. Waited for it. I'm a bit unsure about the background image and the photoshop mode. Can there switched on and off maybe?

I tried the background screen when it was in Beta on my Windows2000 without the photoshop mode and did not found any problems yet in the short time I checked it out. Does the use of the photoshop mode influence the functionality of the background or is the photoshop lay out purely cosmetic and background purely technical?

Is the source of the improved background included in its download?

Will someone consider InkScape Portable? I'm using the beta I downloaded a while ago regularly and seems a great addition to the graphic apps available as Open Source.

Details of the source are on the page for each app or plugin.

The plugin is a simple matter of moving the gimpportablebgwindow.dll and exe into or out of the plugin directory. There's an installer and uninstaller on the page. You can keep those with you and run them if you want (they're small). The PS layout is just a new sessionrc. It renames your existing one as a backup. The uninstaller restores it.

The GIMP is one of my most heavily used apps in the suite, and it's great to have the latest version.

Thanks. I really like this with the photoshop plugin Smile
But it leaves 2 folers in my temp:
\Temp\fontconfig
\Temp\fontconfig\cache
\Temp\fontconfig\cache\ef9c9ad8cc5857eb63cb3660bc8bd202-mipsel.cache-2

Is there something you can do about that?

EDIT

I just tried on a second PC and the file names are the same.

have nothing to do with the plugin (as near as I can tell). I'm not interested in using any different window layouts in GIMP and I got those files in my temp dir also.

that has to do with the font cache GIMP seems to make now. I'm guessing it helps GIMP start up faster......

The Background Window plugin seems to like to make it challenging to resize the Nav., Paths, Layers... Window, it moves it out of the way from the mouse. A workaround is put the third row of tabs into another row, then enabling "snap gimp windows" in options. Just throwing this glich into the attention of the public.

Phew. I need a bigger Flash Drive Smile Mine is only 512 MB Biggrin
The App itself is like 17.4 MB.
But the help files are 62.9 MB.
That must be alot of Documentation.
Thank god.

Is there a addons/plugins page for portable ?
I didn't find it.
I only found the regular program addons etc.

there are links on the left for the help files, the photoshop layout and the background plugin.

what about putting a link the the GIMP support forum on the add-on pages?
And did you see my post about the fontconfig folders?

So, is the GIMP Portable Background Window portable?
Thanks.

It just has some issues, but all the known ones are listed on the plugin's page so you know what to expect.
