installation onto U3 drive

I installed what I thought was an update onto my U3, but it didn't override the previous version. How can I delete the previous version? The launchpad now loads the new version. The old version is in folder named: 3C9FB3F, etc... There is no uninstall file.

Let's see ... it's on the U3

If the old version is not on the launchpad, then you can't use the "Remove Program" button to remove it.

I believe it is safe to just remove the directory that has that long code, if you are sure it is the one that has the old version.

Launch pad icon no longer functions

I removed the folder with the old program, but the icon on the launch pad no longer functions. I just get an error message. I can launch the new Firefox from the exe file, though, or from a shortcut in the "Explore U3 Drive" directory.
Is there any way I can restore the function of the launch pad icon?

Unsupported

Most likely, you installed one of the Firefox for U3 2.x versions floating around. These are unofficial and unsupported and based on outdated code with known bugs. When an app gets corrupted and can't be uninstalled, you need to manually edit config files within the U3 platform and delete files to get it fixed. So, unfortunately, there's not much we can assist with.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

official download

I downloaded the new version directly from the Mozilla Firefox site through the update notice that I received when I opened the program.
I'm wondering if whether I reinstall the entire program, now that the original old version has been deleted, it would hook up to the icon on the launch pad?
BTW, I couldn't find any button to remove programs anywhere.

The version from the Mozilla

The version from the Mozilla site is NOT portable, it can't be installed portably.

usb version

It is indeed the portable version. I accessed the download through my U3 drive and assumed it was an official Mozilla source. Anyway, he program works just fine, it even imported bookmarks automatically from my desktop Opera browser. Only problem is the link to the icon on the launchpad. I can still run the program though, by going to the explore button. I put an icon there, and am wondering if it can be transferred to the launchpad. If not, it's no big deal.

Nope.

It's the local (or normal) version, installed on your USB. It's not portable.

Unless it came from the U3

Unless it came from the U3 website, or from PortableApps.com, it was NOT the portable version. The auto-update feature in Firefox will install a non-portable version.

If you are looking at the U3

If you are looking at the U3 launchpad, you should see an entry for "Settings", just below "Explore". If you hover your mouse pointer over "Settings", you should see a choice of "Program Settings". Click on that. Highlight the program icon you are interested in, and the right hand area should populate itself with information about that program and a "Remove Program" button.

If the Firefox icon is not working, and the "Remove Program" button doesn't work, you may be able to install the original U3 version that you had before the upgrade, then use "Remove Program".

Firefox only has one upgrade, and that is for the full version. If you see an auto-update prompt, you should probably not use it if you are using FF from a portable device, unless you are sure it will update the portable version.

Look at http://usb.smithtech.us/projects/shortcut_creator.php - he has that and several other clever ways to use regular PortableApps programs with a U3 drive. The PortableApps programs work fine from a U3 drive, though it might be slightly easier to just have the U3 menu launch the PortableApps Menu.
