After toying with it for quite some time, I've finally come up with a version of Portable Notepad2 I consider worthy of public release -- PortableNotepad2 0.4.
Portable Notepad2 lets you use the Notepad2 text editor on the go, without leaving mess behind on the current computer. Get it at the Notepad2 project page.
UPDATE: Now comes in two flavors: EXE and ZIP downloads. Waiting on SF.net hosting...

I've been looking for a Notepad replacement for like forever. Standard Notepad would be fine (I don't need code highlighting or anything), except the XP version has a bug involving wordwrap. When you save while wordwrap is on, the word wrapping gets messed up and you have to turn wordwrap off and then on again to fix it. You can see what I mean by resizing the Notepad window after saving a wordwrapped file.
That's the second reason I switched to Notepad2 -- the word wrap actually works!
For me, syntax highlighting is very important, though -- I code in NSIS/(X)HTML/CSS/PHP on the go (and when I learn it, C/++). It just makes reading the code easier.

I use Visual C++ for my C/C++ coding, so I have syntax highlighting there. As for HTML, highlighting really isn't that important to me. I've been writing HTML in standard Notepad for so long that I can read it unhighlighted without much trouble.
One question... does Notepad2 have an option to change the tab size? I prefer 2-character tabs, and Notepad2 seems to default to 4-character ones.
That's my only complaint: the menus are an unorganized mess. Also, the name. I would have preferred "Notepad 2". "Notepad2" just seems awkward.
View > Tab Settings lets you customize that.
I agree about the menus... they are a little funky, but Notepad2 is the best lightweight text editor I've ever used.
If you want, you can download and recompile the source code to change how things work (menus and name) -- www.flos-freeware.ch is the address.

Notepad2 is the best light weight notepad replacement. The syntax hilighting is excellent too. Has most of the features I need, has features that some more advanced editors don't even have. All in all the perfect portable notepad.
It doesn't allow to get custom syntax highlighting as far as I can tell, it doesn't have code folding either. Not saying it is bad, just a couple of key features (for me) seem missing.
Download link has now been 'down' for 72 hours.
Is this app still being supported?
Mark's been gone for several months now anyway...
Plus, it wasn't being supported from the start, really.

Does anybody who grabbed Portable Notepad2 the first time around still have a copy of it? I found this thread in a forum search specifically for Notepad2. It's a great tool, and it's the only programmer's editor I've found that doesn't choke on displaying Unicode characters and can save files in UTF-8 format. (And I had actually gotten pretty sick of using JWPce [a Japanese text editor] to write HTML.)
