"Un-"portable the PortableThunderbird

Hello dear readers,

this might be a no-brainer but ... how do i reimport my PortableApps-Thunderbird-Profile into my Desktop-PC-Thunderbird-Installation?

Simply copying it over won't do any good, because the file-structure is different, right? (And the paths in prefs.js are as static as they used to be 2 years ago Sad )

Thank you for your replies!

What makes you think the

What makes you think the file structure is that different?

Did you take WinMerge Portable and check your old file structure against TBP?

I'd expect the mailbox structure to be the same, at the very least. That would include most everything that's important.

Did you look at the several topics on synchronizing TBP with a desktop TB?

As for paths in prefs.js, you could most likely open it with notepad++ Portable and do a search and replace to fix paths that were incorrect.

problems...

hi there, and as stated: thank you for your reply!

problem is:

a) I dont actually have an existing "old" structure as i was used to use my usb-stick. now i would like to make the install permanent again.

b) Using winmerge to check is not an option because of a)

c) I dont find these several topics on sync'ing. Sad Could you maybe help me out of my misery? Supplying me with the magic search words to put in the searchbox at the top of the page would be nice already because then i could find these topics. Smile that would be much appreciated.

d) From plain sight of a newly created email-profile on my desktop-pc compared to the TBP-profile i'd say there are differences.

e) My prefs.js was already imported from a desktop-TB-install and so is cluttered with paths and i am starting to get lost in it.

sorry for making my post so long, but getting actual help would be really nice Smile

copy

The folder \ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\ should contain exactly the same files as its local counterpart (C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default.???\) So running the local thunderbird once and then copy it over should work.
If you are concerned about paths or if the first way wont work and you dont have too many extensions & extras, I think the easiest way is to set up all your accounts and settings in the local Thunderbird and then only copy the mail folder over. Thats: ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\Mail

done ... at last!

thank you for your time, guys!

Two of my 5 mail-accounts where transferred without a problem but 3 had to be tweaked manually in prefs.js.

After going through the various

user_pref("mail.server.serverX.directory" 's

and not forgetting the

user_pref("mail.server.serverX.directory-rel" 's

where i had to set the new directories everywhere (I thankfully still had the (very) old original settings stated in prefs.js) i was nearly on target.

TB still didn't like me that much yet ... so i had to manually edit (clicky clicky inside TB's Account-Manager ) every mail-account because the server-setting of its "local directory" was still (just alittle) off.

THEN everything worked out smooth!

Btw ... after those changes inside the TB-GUI (the last part of the text above) you still need to RESTART your Thunderbird.

So thank you and have a nice weekend!
