GIMP?

Greetings, I have been thoroughly enjoying pocket GAIM and pocket pocket Firefox; very good ideas.
I'm not sure how possible it would be, but perhaps a portable version of The GIMP could be made?

Portable GIMP

That would be great... Although GTK should be installed on the computer...

It works, but it's buggy
I've got an alpha of GIMP running portably. It gets very buggy when it comes to filters, though. I'll release it as an alpha version in a few days so you can try it out.

Try this one

Hi John!

I made a portable version of Gimp and it seems working very well. You can download it from:

What files?

Hey,

Which files did you copy over between the 2 or are you using a seperate GTK directory? The publicly accessible info on copying GTK+ over GIMP yields a somewhat unstable setup.

Separate directory

I used a separate GTK directory. I did it by setting the environment variable %PATH%.

What about local stuff?

Does this interfere at all with local GTK instances? Say if multiple versions are detected? I've been trying to avoid doing this as it could have unforseen consequences.

No interference...I guess

I've fully replaced %PATH% variable (not add the GTK path), so ther's no way to have conflicts. Anyway, if donwload my package, you'll find the launcher with source code included. The script is made using AutoIt language, powerfull and easy to use.

Congrats on the new site! I

Congrats on the new site! I use Firefox all the time and love it.

I'm not sure if this will work, but I found instructions on how to make Gimp portable here:

Doesn't GTK come with

Doesn't GTK come with GIMPshop? At least, GIMPshop doesn't say it needs GTK...

I've done a little messing around with GIMP/GIMPshop myself. What happens is, if you move it to new directories/new computers, it has to recreate a folder with plugins and so on in the user's files. This means you leave a trase that you have used GIMP on that computer, and it takes longer for GIMP to load. So, GIMP can be told to make this folder it's directory, it won't have this problem (assuming it is specified according to the executable's location in the directory, not on the computer). Does that make any sense?

If GIMP will become portable, why not make Inkscape portable too? It also needs GTK. www.inkscape.org

GIMPshop works on a flash drive

I've found that GIMPshop will easilly install and run on a flash drive, though whenever you run it on a new computer it has to create the user profile folder every time you run it on a new computer, and it occasionally has problems shutting down. It's still alot better than using paint in the university computer lab.

If you can find the command

If you can find the command line, you can choose where to put that user profile. I'm taking a look at how to go about doing so:
http://www.google.com/search?q=gimp+command+line

Apparently we can do this: --gimprc gimprc
But I'm not sure that it will work.

It looks like GIMPshop contains the GTK lib!

Edit: I found this:
http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=341&highlight=&sid=50eaa05...
Their instructions aren't that great, because it still creats a gimp folder on the computer. However, it does tell how to incorportate the GTK lib for GIMP (not GIMPShop). GIMPShop tends to have older versions of GIMP for Windows... most people want the latest they can get.
