Firefox not saving settings and extension on campus computer

All my extension work fine on my computer, but when I go to the computer lab on campus none of my settings and extension will work. What can I do about this?

The first thing I'd suspect

The first thing I'd suspect is that at home somehow your settings are getting saved in the default location rather than the portable location. That's been known to happen with certain kinds of updates. Unless you are watching carefully, you wouldn't notice it. You could prove this hypothesis wrong by trying your removable drive on several other computers; if home is the only one that gets your settings, that would support it rather than disproving it.

Another possibility is that the computer in the computer lab is locked down so as to prevent them from working. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but I suppose it's a possibility.

Oh!

You are right. My settings are not working on my friends laptop either. Do I have to reinstall firefox portable to correct this error?

yep

try reinstalling it. Just re-install it over your old version. It will keep your personal settings intact. If it doesn't work after reinstall, then your old settings are broken and you have to delete the whole thing before you reinstall (backup your bookmark if you like to keep them!) to start anew with a clean install.

I Did all....

I did all that and I still get the same problem. I even get an install error when I try to install extensions from my friend's computer. I even downloaded the extension on my friend's desktop and still don't work. WHAT IS UP!!!

I dont know.

Maybe your campus computer is so locked down that Firefox cant run?
Or maybe an extension has problems and is causing the mess. If a clean install cant run then you're out of luck.

Try This

Reinstalling FirefoxPE doesn't change anything in the Data directory, like your profile. It's likely your profile is messed up somehow.

Here's what I would try.

Go to FirefoxPortable\Data and rename the profile directory to something else, e.g. profile-backup

Now see if FirefoxPE loads and behaves. If it does, gradually copy (not move) over the files from the profile-backup directory, for example bookmarks.html, one at a time, and then test firefox after each file is restored. Keep a copy of the profile-backup unchanged, so you can get another copy of the file again if something gets messed up.

Do this just for the files you absolutely need. If all you need is your Bookmarks, that's the only one I'd copy.

There is an .rdf file that is cited as getting corrupted regularly. I don't happen to know which one it is, otherwise I'd suggest you try renaming that to something.rdfbackup and start FFPE to see if it is working.

It's also possible one of the extensions or plugins is messed up. You can do the same sorts of thing with the plugins directory, and add them back one at a time.

If you are experimenting with profile directories and files, make sure you do not have FFPE running. In fact, it might be best to exit from PAM too.

If you have a good backup (such as the ones made by the PAM backup) you could restore a profile from a time when it was working, if you can identify that point in time. But do keep a copy of your current profile too, in case some of those files are still good and needed.

Well

I upgraded to portable firefox 3 beta 3. I really didn't want to do that because not all my fav extension are not compatible yet. I love my settings to much to use someone else settings. Thank you all for the help!
