Hello

Hello,

I just found this community last night and joined today, it seems really great. I bout a U3 Cruzy Smart flash/jump/thumb drive and only recently started to discover its potential as a potable application/computer. I am interested in having my flash drive as my synchronization and launcher for some of my must have programs. I have 4 computers (5 that I support). It came with the "U3" Launchpad, and I am using "Firefox" and the "SignupShield" program (which I REALLY Like). Now, I am going to guess that this software here at PortableApps is not computable. My Girlfriend is in Grad school and I have bought her a 4gig U3 smart drive as well, she dose not know much about computers and I would like to set her drive up so it can be a safe working environment for her at school, work and home as well as managing files and copy's and stuff like that.

Security is very important to me. Is "TouCan" and "KeepPass Portable"program really safe and secure?

I know that this is a really long rambling post I think my head is a little fuzzy from the flue medicine (that time of year here), so I thank you for your pationce in reading this.

Will PortableApps be able to help me more then U3? Can I make it more secure? Safer? Easyer to use?

Thank you for your time,

-Daniel

Welcome to PortableApps. U3

Welcome to PortableApps.

U3 is a bit of a touchy subject around here. The manufacturers are phasing the format out in favor of a new one that is coming out in a few months. PortableApps.com no longer supports the U3 format.

But never fear, PortableApps.com applications work just fine on a U3 drive. A simple way to set it up is to launch the "StartPortableApps" program manually once the U3 drive is mounted. SmithTech (of these forums and usb.smithtech.us, I think) has a utility that can add PortableApps applications into the U3 launchpad.

Using PortableApps versions of, say, Firefox and Thunderbird has the advantage of being supported, whereas the version customized for just U3 is quite old.

Toucan and KeePass are secure. But don't take our word for it, KeePass has its own reputation you can Google for on the Internet. Toucan's encryption component is likewise fairly well known.

The best encryption is a drive program like TrueCrypt, but it looks like you cannot run that unless you have Administrative privileges. So people who might travel or need to use a locked-down public computer have to be prepared to go without.

Will installing PortableApps

Will installing PortableApps (the big one suit) on my U3 flash drive overwrite the U3 software? Or will they both be on there and I can manual launch one or the other?
