Soulseek(tm) is a unique ad-free, spyware free, and just plain free file sharing application.
I'm told it needs a registry entry:
because slsk uses a current user reg key to look for where the cfg files are. if the computer you are using doesn't have that reg key you'll get an error about not being installed correctly.
Is there a way around it?
Try Registry Rapper (Google it).

You can do it with Registry Rapper, but it will be a tiny bit messy. You'll have to edit the .reg file everytime the drive letter changes, and you'll jave to move all the config files (.cfg) to the same folder as the RR executable. 'PortableSoulseek' is a little rough around the edges, but worth it IMHO.
What needs to be done?
Sorry, I thought i made it clear. Apparently I am a geek at heart.
First:
1. Install Soulseek.
2. Copy the Soulseek directory to your key.
3. If you don't want Soulseek on your system now, uninstall it.
4. Install/Implement
i finally found the time to try regrapper, but it deos not work. i still get an error message.
although i followed all your instructions, chances of course are that i did something wrong, but just what.
is the error in RegRapper??

regrapper seems to work as advertised. but it looks like soulseek 'wants' more than just registry entries
When i get a chance.

Ah, it seems I may have forgotten to mention something:
You must adjust the path in the registry file to reflect the path on your removeable drive. I keep the folder structure on my drive similar to C:, just because thats the way I started on this endeavor (the whole portable app thing) about a year and a half ago. I tend not to change very often.
Your registry file within the settings folder needs to reflect your folder structure. Here is my mine:
H:\Program Files\Soulseek\RegRap.exe
I was doing it the hard way before, by editing my reg file each time the drive letter changed on my computer, but now I just make a registry file for each machine, like so:
File #1: **For my home Computer**
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Soulseek]
"InstallPath"="H:\\Program Files\\Soulseek"
...etc...
File #2: **For me Da's Computer**
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Soulseek]
"InstallPath"="G:\\Program Files\\Soulseek"
...etc...
File #3: **For the Public Terminal**
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Soulseek]
"InstallPath"="E:\\Program Files\\Soulseek"
...etc...
And if your proggie is in any extra directories, you'll need to put them into the path, pointing out, (only because I know that I would miss this were the situation reversed! :p) that the 'exe' in question is RegRap.exe.
See?
hello
