A Big Menu Enigma....

The problem I am facing defies logic:

My menu works perfectly on my Vista Laptop, but now all the buttons (video, Music, etc...) freeze when I press them on my XP Desktop!
It was still working fine a week ago, and no changes occurred in the meantime.

I tried reinstalling the menu, I even tried your patch for "below-xp" PCs.

I don't know what to do now, and what makes me annoyed is that I really can't understand the problem.

Current Beta

Try the current beta release here:
https://portableapps.com/node/8450

It's actually more stable than the stable release.

Wow! I knew you were fast

Wow! I knew you were fast for software releases, but your answering skills really matches that!

I like the beta version, but I am not currently using it because half of the time my PortableApps menu is opened in a professional context... I am waiting for a button that would show/hide icon in the right-hand corner to upgrade.

However I should try it again to see if it solves the problem.

I hope you will use your genius to add that option to the beta version before it becomes official, because apart from this option that I miss, the new menu is great!

Regards

Are you talking about the

Are you talking about the place for a "Personal Picture" which starts out as a smiley face? You can double click it and choose another picture -- maybe a solid color or your business logo would have a professional look.

Don't get me wrong, I like

Don't get me wrong, I like the feature.... I would just like an option that can switch to the 1 version tray aspect, all plain.
Then I could have my logo when I am with friends or at home, and still enjoy the classy, unified look of the tray I am used to.

Any clue about the problem I am facing with the current tray. I like to understand the un-understandable! Smile

If you try the beta 4

If you try the beta 4 version and find that it works, then remove it and go back to the previous version and find that it still fails, that would be an indication that you are being bothered by one of the instabilities in the older version.

The new version did not just introduce the smiley face logo in the upper right corner; that's a minor addition. The other changes are (I believe) focused on making it work better. So if you test it and find that it works, the next question is whether you can put up with the Personal Picture feature somehow.

If it also fails, at least John and the experts will have some additional information to go on.

Can we assume you've "checked the drive for errors" and found none, and done those other sorts of troubleshooting tasks on both the drive and on the PC? Can we also assume that you have not updated or upgraded any parts of the desktop computer or its operating system or software on it, nor installed anything new? When it locks up, does windows make any entry in its Event Log, or might there be anything else you can report as a clue?

If the older version doesn't work but the new version does, and you can't identify what has changed on that PC to keep the old version from working on that PC, you might just need to wait for a newer version, or perhaps try one of the Mod versions that might have both the functionality you need and the aesthetics as well.

Thank you so much for your

Thank you so much for your help.

What bothers me is that I had been away from my desktop for a week, so I can be sure nothing has changed.
Teaching French in a computing school, understanding what is going on with computers and software grew on me, ad this is why I am annoyed not to understand what could have happened.
Moving back to teh beta version now....

A new enigma, now with 1.1

A new enigma, now with 1.1 Beta 4:

I have a Vista laptop, and Portable Apps always starst automatically, which is really cool, on my XP desktop, it was asking me what I want to to with the drive, and since the menu has some sort of autostart, I had the Start Portable Apps option, so it was almost just as cool.

Today, with no modification of any kind, it stopped doing that... Now I have to go and fetch it in the start menu, enter the drive and click on the start Portable Apps icon inside the drive....
It annoys me when I don't understand what is going on. Even reinstalling The Beta Menu did not change a thing.

Any comment on how to solve this, or even any clue of what is going on without a tip to solve it would be VERY welcome.

Thanks

Your autorun broke. Don't

Your autorun broke. Don't know why, don't know how- but it has happened to me on my computer.

There is a fix running around somewhere, maybe someone would be so kind as to post it. . .

AutoRunFix.exe

I had this problem awhile back. I did find a solution for it on the Microsoft website, but I don't remember exactly where. It had me download a program called AutoRunFix.exe and run that. I think it fixes all the registry entries that could be messed up. I'm not sure exactly how it works, I just know that it worked for me. I still have the file if you want it.
