Centralized hosting?

I've been looking around the beta testing, and saw the different hosting places, some good, some bad, and some that I think are good but others say is bad. What I think is, that there should be a centralized hosting place for betas. That way people don't need to look all over to find decent hosting. I mean, RapidShare is a little too naggy for most people :(. And MediaFire, is blocked in a lot of places. Think about it this way, John doesn't want mirroring of this site, mainly because of how frequently stuff gets updated here. Well, for hosting, there shouldn't be mirrors, either, right (maybe wrong)?

Yes.

I totally agree, but it's not that easy. Patrick has done a great job by giving away hosting on his site, but it only handles 8MB files, which is a problem for a lot of us. I have a Sourceforge project that I would willingly give release privileges to anyone on the forums I knew would do a good job. Again, that's not that convenient, but it's better than nothing.

I

have found Drop.io to be a really good site for this kind of thing, if someone sets up a portableapps drop and sets an admin password, but chooses the 'View and Add Content' option then everyone could use it (up to 100mb I think) and that admin could clear out old versions and stuff. I would be quite happy to do it Smile

I'm thinking

I'm thinking that's a pretty good idea. It would beat using RapidShare and MegaUpload and such. After creation, just sticky the location in the Beta Testing forum so it's available. Other drops can be added as needed I would guess.

Right then

its up here. Anyone can add files to it at the moment using the add button on the right hand side. I'll clean out old versions of software periodically. If were are going to go over the 100MB we could either get a new one (portableappsbeta2) or I'll pay to have it upgraded to a premium 1GB acount (and it's only $10US, the exchange rate is great at the moment). If someone could drop a note in the beta testing forums that would be great.

Riax (I think that's his name) is the manager of Simplexity Networks. I think he might be able to provide a solution. I'm not good enough to set up permissions on my site yet . . . I think I need to move past HTML.

To qoute In my free time, I maintain a network of servers. While I've built a small web hosting company (Simplexity Network - www.simplexitynetwork.com) around providing free web space, we're also planning to begin hosting TeamSpeak voice communication servers. If you are in need of web space, but don't want to pay a monthly price, drop by our website and check out our packages.
And yes, I closed my tags Smile

I contacted the owner of

I contacted the owner of that site and he said this is what an individual could get -

Package #1 -
50 MB storage
FTP access
no ads, no bandwidth limits
URL under www.simplexitynetwork.com

Package #2 -
100 MB storage
FTP and file manager access
1 ad per page, no bandwidth limits
option for a subdomain - ie .simplexitynetwork.com

I double checked, and he is OK with package 1 being used as file hosting only. If you were to choose package 2, he asks that you would include an index.html file and list files available on it, so the 1 ad per page requirement could be met. All in all, I think it's VERY fair and generous.

Awesome!

That's great! Sounds like a great idea.

Edit: Here's a decent directory script we could work the ad into, too.
