Actually, what had happened (I think) is that somehow the user language got changed, and was a language my computer didn't support (maybe chinese) so it didn't show any characters. I had to blindly find my way to preferences (which still had english sub headings), and find the pull down to switch back to american english. I think the computer I was on was set to Chinese before I was using it. Thanks for your help.

You mean like the menus and statusbar? That's a bug in VLC. Just bring another window to the foreground and switch back.
