FF encountered problem

One week ago the public computer with WinXP crashed while I was in FF 2.0.0.12. Ever since, whenever FF is opened, received window "FF.exe has encountered a problem & needs to close. Error signuare: app name FF.exe; app ver 1.8.20080.20121; modVer 7.0.2600.2180; offset: 00036fa3.

Reinstalled FF portable over the top and no change. Have also attempted to recover in various older episodes, but always with same resultant window. This obtrusive window remains open; however, can continue to work in FF. Is there a way to eliminate it; should FF first be deleted (except for the profile and ????)?

It

happened to me once but because of a virus that damaged the browser...

1. run scandisk on your thumbdrive.

2. test... if it keep showing the message...

3. run firefox on safe mode (other people here will tell you how to do it, in the portable version I don't know how)... if the problem persist...

4. Do you have an installed Firefox on your computer? delete your portable version completely, install a new one and copy your profile from the installed version to the portable one.

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

Use the ini file

to apply the "-safe-mode" switch.

No *.ini

Interesting that when I search all files under F.removable disk where FF is located on the thumb, for for *.ini no .ini is found. However multiple other files are there which do not contain .ini!! Also tried searching for firefox.ini and nothing. Have included all sub folders including systems files. Perhaps related to the ability of the search on the computer being used?

Should be

%drive%:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Other\Source\FirefoxPortable.ini
The readme file besides explains the use of it.

Encountered similar problems which where caused by a broken file within the profile, perhaps within an addon.Saved my bookmarks and the profile; deleted the profile within FFP and made a restart. It worked, copied over the bookmarks and the extensions files - same problem again. Go back to one.Reinstalled the extensions one by one one - everythings fine.

Thanks, but *.ini is not

Thanks, but *.ini is not found -- strange s when search for *.ini or ini it produces a long list of files which do not have "ini" in the name! However, problem resolved by copying the profile to another drive, deleting entire FFP, then reinstall and copy contents to profile back over the one just installed. No more window in my face!

were you searching

for files -named- *.ini or files -containing- *.ini ?

I know I've seen people fill in the wrong box before now, and get odd results.

For that matter, I've also seen search get it disasterously wrong when the indexing service is enabled, since it doesn't bother checking on disk, just in the index, and if that is out of date (which happens whenever the indexer has a problem), you're sunk.
