Wiki says Portable Firefox leaves files behind

On the wiki site quoted
"However, Portable Firefox leaves behind downloaded temporary files with their original names."

Is it true? Has anybody checked?

anything stored in the

anything stored in the windows temp directory, or in the MUICache or MRU section of the registry will remain behind, this is a limitation of Windows, not of the apps here at PortableApps.com

Yes and No

This only occurs if you configure Firefox to open a downloaded application with an external program. It's a minor and simple bug that will actually be handled by the PortableApps.com Platform itself beginning with version 1.1.

Basically, it's a bug in a specific circumstances that affects any portable verion of Firefox and has no business being in a wikipedia article like this (PortableApps.com leaves behind **FAR** less than Ceedo, U3, etc... but look and see if there is anything similar in those articles.) Sounds like someone with an axe to grind to me.

important

Perhaps there should be a note about this on the ffp - page. This and that some extensions could leave many files behind.

Of course thats not the fault of portableapps, but i think it should be written somewhere in prominent place. I'm kind of an experienced user, but I got shocked, when I see, what some extensions (like downthemall) leave behind. I just didn't thought about it. Users with less experience will never know anything about it, if nobody tell them.

IMHO this is a serious and important thing and should be done soon!

Certainly creates false expectations...

I have a folder that gets left behing, but only occasionally and it has nothing in it

So I'm not bothered by it Biggrin

Has nothing to do with a download manager.

P.S.

@ John:
Oh, and i don't know why you think this is not an aspect for a wikipedia article.
If your website promotes Firefox Portable with "leaves NO traces behind", but it does, it is an important thing.
Actually, I don't understand WHY you write "no traces" even if you know it's not right (here in the forum you write "farr less" traces...)

Aren't downloaded files

Aren't downloaded files personal? Can contain VERY personal information. (About sexual preferances, for example Wink )

Actually, portable apps are billed as leaving no personal information behind. This is in contrast to all the commercial platforms which claim "no traces" but leave registry keys, executables and other things. I don't think I've ever claimed anything I've done has left no traces behind and can't find that term anywhere on the PortableApps.com homepage, Firefox Portable homepage, Firefox Portable support page, portable app definition page, etc... so I'm unsure why you keeping insistently using it with quotes as if implying that I keep saying it. Blum

Firefox itself will leave a copy of certain files behind in TEMP when you use a helper app to open them. It does NOT do this if you save the files to a location of your choice. This has been noted on the Firefox Portable Support page for quite some time. To ensure users are aware, I added a note to its entry on the main Firefox Portable page as well.

As mentioned, the PortableApps.com Platform's upcoming 1.1 release will be automatically handling TEMP file clearing for all apps. The next beta which should be the final release is coming (I'm working on the installer).

Sorry, i quoted the whole

Sorry, i quoted the whole sentence in the first time, but shorten it in the second, which leads to misunderstanding.
I just think temporary files of downloaded files are personal files.
If this bug will be gone in the next releases, everything will be perfect Smile

Will the updated version also delete the temp files done by certain extensions? If not, i would appreciate it, if this could be written on the homepage, too. Like "leaves no personal files behind (some extension could do so)"

Yes and No

The PortableApps.com Platform 1.1 will be managing the TEMP environment for all apps launched from it (including apps not in PortableApps.com Format and not released here). On exit, it will remove it so that even if you're using an app, an extension, a plugin or something else that leaves some temp files, they'll be deleted by the platform without affecting the other temp files on the host PC (like those used by local apps). This seemed the best approach to ensure the privacy of the end user across the board (which is really important to me).

Some extensions may store data on the actual PC (like in APPDATA), but I don't think any of those are considered true extensions and are not available from addons.mozilla.org.
