[Game] UFO Alien Invasion Portable

UFO Alien Invasion Portable

Description:
It is the year 2084. You control a secret organisation charged with defending Earth from a brutal alien enemy. Build up your bases, prepare your team, and dive head-first into the fast and flowing turn-based combat.

UFO: ALIEN INVASION is a squad-based tactical strategy game in the tradition of the old X-COM PC games, but with a twist. Our game combines military realism with hard science-fiction and the weirdness of an alien invasion. The carefully constructed turn-based system gives you pin-point control of your squad while maintaining a sense of pace and danger.

Over the long term you will need to conduct research into the alien threat to figure out their mysterious goals and use their powerful weapons for your own ends. You will produce unique items and use them in combat against your enemies. If you like, you can even use them against your friends with our multiplayer functionality.

'UFO: Alien Invasion'. Endless hours of gameplay -- absolutely free.

The game takes a lot of inspiration from the X-COM series by Mythos and Microprose. However, it's neither a sequel nor a remake of any X-COM or other commercial title. What we as a team wanted to make is a brand new experience that tries to surpass the quality of games from 1992, rather than simply recreate them with flashier graphics.

We also believe that open-source projects don't need to be disorganised or badly-managed. We work together in a friendly and professional way, with a clear vision for a game that we know is worth playing.

That, or update the driver

That, or update the driver for your graphics chip.

Either way this is an issue with the program itself, not the fact it's been made portable.

Graphics Driver Issue

This issue is with the program not recognizing your graphics driver and using the default MS openGL drivers, as shown here:
GL_VENDOR: Microsoft Corporation
GL_RENDERER: GDI Generic
GL_VERSION: 1.1.0

Ok, here's the deal. The 2.2 release of UFOAI does not work well with ATI cards. To bypass this issue, go to Go to c:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-8_xp32_dd_50960\Driver\XP_INF\B_51322\
and copy the file atioglxx.dl_ to a folder that's easy to navigate to from command prompt.

Run your command prompt (cmd in the run bar in start menu) and uncompress the dl_ file by navigating to the directory where you copied the file and typing:
expand atioglxx.dl_ atioglxx.dll

Stick the atioglxx.dll file into the folder where you have the game files on your portable device. This should make the game run on ati cards.

Great post DeKyos

I assume you work on the project (or are very familiar with it) since you registered here and that's your only post. Welcome.

Slight correction to the above: The directory structure will depend on the version of the drivers you downloaded. For example, the "7-8" means those are the 7.8 drivers. The current version is 8.3 so that along with the other directory names will be different. Just follow the example given down until you find the file mentioned above and if that fails, search c:\ATI\SUPPORT for "atioglxx.dl_".

Thanks

I don't actually work on the project, I just decided to try the game out (after seeing it here on this forum, lol) and am running an ATI card.

Yes the drivers were the 7.8, I chose that because that was the last driver known to run the game for ATI cards without issue. The 8.2+ drivers may work if you stick the dll in the folder, I have not tried this yet.

I would like to get involved in the project though, as well as some portable projects, I'm a first-year computer science major, most of my previous experience has been hardware, not software, so it's a relatively new endeavor for me.

And the Beta Testing Data

So far the game seems to work just as well on my portable device as it does at home. The only obvious issue is that I am running it at a lower resolution due to the latency cap on the flash drive.

Works well on 3 different graphics cards with the .dll file in the app directory. Only shortcoming is I think we could probably compress the entire program a bit more for portable application.

No major bugs seen here. Only thing of note, is I plugged my drive into my work computer, which is an old Win2k system, and after about 2 minutes of the game running I could hear the CPU fan begin spinning up hardcore, which it's never done before that, so be careful where you try to run games like this Wink

On my 'old' Win2kPro running

On my 'old' Win2kPro running from Flash drive went quite well. Does your 'old' PC only supports USB 1.1. Maybe you can verify that.

I myself bought a card to get support for USB 2.0. The speed difference is quite worth the buy of the card.

[edit] I misread your post. The fan starts spinning harder? Hmm after a couple of minutes? Maybe to cool it extra because the extra processing made more heat?

Well I'm no hardware expert.... maybe you know one Smile

on Vista and XP SP2, nothing bad to report... Smile

Work Computer

Not putting a penny into this computer, it's not even mine Wink

It runs fine, it's just I could hear the CPU fan picking up speed after about 2 mins, I'm running on an integrated video card, probably doesn't even have a dedicated GPU, so it's understandable that the CPU picks up some heat when running a game.

Works great

Works great here, no problems found. it runs even perfect with my Nvidia FX5200, that i currently use Smile
But i used annother method to get the programm files of the game in the app dir: i opened the installer executable with 7-zip (what is possible with nearly all NSIS-Installer Packets and unpaked the game files directly in the App\ufoalieninvasion - folder. I don't know if this methode is against any license (i don't hope so), but it works fine, too, cause the archiv has the same folder structure than the game itself,... So i don't have to install it, copy the files and uninstall it after that.
But it's a great game, that i think, is worth to install Smile
