portable windows exe emulator (wine like app) for a MAC

WINE Is Not an Emulator. But that's okay, I'll let it slide. Smile

That joke went right over your head, I see. WINE stands for "WINE Is Not an Emulator" But yeah, WINE isn't an emulator. Nothing is being emulated, as the processor can execute the same instructions regardless of the operating system. WINE is merely a UNIX-compatible implementation of the Windows API.

As for whether or not Darwine is portable, I couldn't tell you. I don't use a Mac.

Oh, and there's no such thing as an "exe emulator." EXE is merely a file format used to contain an executable program. That's like calling Photoshop, which can open and save PNGs (among other formats), a "PNG emulator."

Depends.

That depends on how new your Mac is. The current generation of Macs all have Intel x86 processors. For some reason, I seem to take that fact for granted as if Macs always had Intel processors. Forgive me. Smile

Edit: Just found out that Darwine can't run Windows EXEs on PowerPC processors. From the FAQ...

Is the Darwin/Mac OS X release of Wine currently able to run Windows executable (.exe)?

No. We are currently working on integrating an x86 emulator in wine in order to run Win32 exe on a PowerPC Box. But on Darwin-x86 a Win32 .exe should run within wine with a limited effort."

So unless you have an Intel Mac, the point is moot anyway.

Summing it up...

There's a thing called WINE. It is an implementation of the Windows API within Linux. It allows you to run Windows apps -- like these portable apps -- directly within Linux.

There's another thing called DarWINE... which is a project to make WINE work on OSX. It already works on Intel Macs (though it's only a developer preview) and they are planning on creating an emulator or something to allow PowerPC Macs to be able to use it as well... (WINE uses x86 instructions... so it works without mucking too much up on an Intel Mac... but not on a PowerPC Mac).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Haha.

You basically just repeated everything I've said over the past 5 posts.
