I have searched the forums but did not find anything on this. I use A-Suite and have it set to start up a bunch of programs (mostly desktop enhancements) but they are all minimized to the system tray. I was wondering if any one knows of a app that can be used portably to hide these icons.
so it isn't a popular app to write, to do something that is natively in the OS and handled perfectly well enough for most people most of the time.
I don't remember ever seeing anything that would do what your after. Sorry.
I say turn the systry icon off in the programs themselves (there's usually an option for it). Problem solved.

and I am not being sarcastic. Sometimes the icons multiply like rabbits!
I want to keep most of the app icons available for use, but only have the most-used ones in sight. I went looking months ago for a systray icon manager, only found limited freeware solutions. But maybe one of these will help you out.
QuickRun from PartridgeSoft, which I portablized using JauntePE, can move selected systray icons into a button between Start button and QuickLaunch that expands into a menu upon mouseover. So I put my seldom-used ones into the button. I've only used it on two pc's, both with admin rights, so I don't know for sure how portable it really is.
There is also ShellTrayInfo from the CodeProject (you must register on their site to download) which can re-arrange your tray icons into the desired sequence. I've only used this one on my home pc, and never tested it for portability.
TaskbarShuffle can rearrange system tray icons (by holding CTRL hotkey while dragging with mouse) as well as taskbar buttons, and there is a portable "no-install" version available. I've used this one to put my "never-used" at the far left of the queue so I never have to see them.
So far I have tried TraySaver and SysTray and the both won't work without Admin privileges.
I just tried QuickRun and just have to say brilliant! Thanks for the suggestion grannyGeek. It works PERFECT for this computer without Admin privileges. I have not tried it on another computer yet though so I will let you know how that goes.
I tried to get QuickRun to work as a portable app using JuanTePE, but it never seemed to work. Sad... If I could get QuickRun to work as a Portable app and remember the settings, it would be perfect!
Tray Saver.

Download SysTray at the following website:

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.
Like I said, I only am using it on two computers, and it so far always remembers the unique settings for each one.
I used JPE version 0.16, and I simply used the Wizard. Maybe you need to try a different version????
The one issue I do have is that I think something in QuickRun doesn't completely shut down when I exit the app, and so the "unplug safely" message keeps telling me that the usb drive can't be shut down yet. I haven't yet identified the process that is still running.
Edit --- oops, I intended to reply to mkayc post of March 11, 2008 - 7:54am, somehow my reply is to the original post, sorry about that.
Do you think it makes a difference if it is done on a computer with administrative privileges or not? I have only done it on computers without administrative privileges. Also; where did you download JPE version .16? I can only find a different version and am not sure if I am doing it right. Anyone know of any other software that makes apps portable?
I just tried, and it opened and runs fine, but locked up when I tried to exit the app, and froze up the pc for about 5 min, I finally got hold of another open window, and it eventually let loose.
Looks like this one will need some tweaks and tucks to get it to run properly without admin rights. I will experiment this weekend and see what I can accomplish.
I only have web access from work, and we are blocked from hosting sites like RapidShare and MediaFire, and now they blocked us from almost every software download site too (like SourceForge and MajorGeeks forum and just every place I loved.) So I would send you some other JPE versions to try, but I have no way to do that, unless you want to post a disposable email address here on the forum. Let me know....
Emailing me a zip of the portable file would be awesome if you could do that. My email is pezboy11 at yahoo. This is my first email address that i never use so you can spam away.
Thanks a heap.
