Hi,
Would anyone know if there is a possibility to have a password prompt when first accessing the PortableApps?
Many thanks

and the answer is : No, not at the moment. Some flash-drives have this
function, maybe yours is one of them ?
Using password on them usually means needing admin rights.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, that would be true. It's in the same way as when the system requested a password for accessing the O.S..

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I have follow your link and will try and tailor the app KeePass. Should have notice it on the menu available.

KeePass will not create a password prompt for your flash drive. KeePass is a password manager, it stores a database of all of your passwords, then encrypts them to keep them hidden.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
but it's still a good idea to use kee-pass
If you combine it with encrypted 7zip for private files you
might be able to protect whatever it is you want kept private better
with that set-up than with a password-protected drive .
asked about 7zip encryption but that was a long time ago... the answer was "it is not a good idea" (Answer from John T. Haller)
Why? because when you decompress your 7zip file the uncompressed files goes to a temp folder in the host PC... so it is worst than an unprotected Thumb Drive, you are giving all your files to the host computer.
I just use a master password for Firefox, a password to open nPOP (it comes with the app), and a password for Thunderbird (with an extension), the rest of Apps don't store personal settings (unless you think that your initials on OpenOffice are personal information).
For my documents, I just take good care of my PDrive, until can find something with no admin rigtsh.
There is something called "exe protector" but it is detected as a trojan by some antivirus programs... worst this app creates a password protected exe (like PStart, for example) but you can launch everything just exploring the drive, and even the protected app is hidden with a .bak extension...

I believe it is possible to use 7-zip in a way that it doesn't use the system %TEMP% directory when extracting. At the very least, you could redirect the %TEMP% directory while you are using 7-zip so that temporary files are stored on the USB drive rather than on the host computer's C drive. (John says that the next version of PA will manage the TEMP directory, which may make that automatic.)
Temporary files are a huge problem with encryption. If your word processor makes a temporary copy of the file while it is working, even if it deletes it when done, it is sometimes possible to "undelete" it and read the contents. Even "wiping" a temporary file might not be enough, since it may have used several different blocks to store its data while working and the "wipe" might not get all the blocks. In addition, USB drives swap blocks in and out of use to prevent wear, and sometimes the data can be accessed via forensic methods. On the fly encryption like Truecrypt can let you put those temporary files in the encrypted volume.

I also wanted this feature on my drive, but I couldn't work around PortableApps. What I did, though, was use both PStart and TrueCrypt.
I have a 1GB drive, and I encrypted all but 20MB. PStart and TrueCrypt are the only programs installed on the unprotected space, everything else is in the protected portion of the drive.
If you or someone else is interested in this I could write something up to explain the process, though have in mind that you'll need admin rights for it work.

I would be interested in seeing what you did, airis if it's not too much trouble. Thank you in advance.
I've been trying to figure out how to get a password prompt as well. Do you have a tut for what you did with Pstart and TrueCrypt?
this'll take up twice as much room, but, maybe make a password prompt that extracts and deletes an SFX archive, then when it gets closed, it'll copy all the files into an SFX archive.
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
