My conclusion is Microsoft Skydrive sucks since I can't get the file using IE or FF.

I was finally able to get the file from Skydrive. Took a while to start but once it did I think it went at my max bandwidth of 24Mbit....wicked fast.
I'll check it out tonight after work if I remember.

but the download from skydrive is so freaking slow.......

I concede! I'll switch to MediaFire.
EDIT:
I finally got my SourceForge project to work, so we'll go with SourceForge.

Sourceforge FTW! Welcome to to the collective.

Two Thumbs.db files are in the download.
One file isn't UPX compressed. Is that for a reason?
Did you reuse the icon that came with the app? Man do the 32bit icons look bad as in VERY pixelated. Maybe someone can help ya out and rebuild all the icon with a better source picture (I'm going to compose an entry for Ryan's wiki hopefully on the topic of icons soon.).
Cancer Survivors -- Remember the fight, celebrate the victory!
Help control the rugrat population -- have yourself spayed or neutered!
That's the one that came with the app. I'll see that I look around a little for another icon, but that's all I've found.
I'm on Vista, and I can't find a thumbnails caching option on the Folder Options, so I can't help that right now.
What file isn't UPXed? I use UPAX from Ryan's site, so I can't imagine what the problem is.

Ok...I *swear* I UPXed the \App\MediaCoder dir earlier and one file was compressed that wasn't. Now that I go back to re-check my work, it's not happening.
I blame Gremlins! (good work - "my bad" ;))

Alright. Thanks for the comments.

As far as Vista and the thumbnail databases, I suggest writing a cleanup script that will purge a target dir of Thumbs.db before packaging an app.
Hmmmm...maybe that's a suggestion for John for the installer. Before it gathers up all the files to compress & package, it somehow recurses the whole portableapp directory structure and finds/deletes all Thumbs.db files.

I'll do the icon if you want
i'm a graphic artist in my spare time
Just reply saying what you want, give me an idea of what you need
i.e.
256x256 PNG
or
24x24 .ICO (windows icon format)
etc.
go into as much detail as you want, and i'll see what i can do
Thank you very much. I just need an 48x48 .ICO. That's the only specifications I have. Again, thank you very much!

That'll be fine
it should be up tomorrow some time
i may include one of various qualities as well as an added bonus in a seperate.ico
Here's the icon requirement for newer PortableApps. (Quoting Patrick since I couldn't find the excellent reference from John that I somehow didn't save as a favorite earlier today.)
"16, 32, and 48 dimensions of both the 8 bit (256 Colors) format, and the 32 bit (XP)"
If the new .ico file could contain those six combos of size/bitdepth, that would be great.
EDIT: Here's the reference from John stating the same thing.

Thanks very much. There's nothing I can do for the readme, but I'll put you in the "Acknowledgments" section of the help file, if that's fine with you, as there is no readme, except a readme about the MediaCoderPortable.ini. Again, thank you so much!

yeah that's great
thank you
Can someone inform the MediaCoder programmers that Skeletorfw hooked us up with a new icon and ask them if they want to use it? Solve the "problem" at the source too I say.

Hey I like to do graphic art too....U should post a 256x version of whatever you come up with, I'd like to see your work.

I shall post it in a post in this thread:
a zip file with the 256x256 png file, the fully optimised xp and 8bit icon, and the psd format file so you can see how i did it
Awesome, thanks. If you wanna see my stuff, look here. It's not ALL completely original, the calculators and the monitor and the hard drive are images from Everaldo's crystal sets.

You are very good at highlighting and effects like that!
Very useful for icon design
I'm more of a digital artist, but i enjoy everything like that: icons, 3d modelling, digital painting etc.

i wasn't completely happy with it though :S
GIMP really needs a 3d plugin
I clicked the settings button in MediaCoder with Firefox portable running and it told me to close it. It said "Firefox is already running, but not responding..."
EDIT: At the first opening, it asked for Firefox.exe, and I directed it to the portable one on my USB.
I can launch the application. The usual 'first time it launches' routine runs, which is to open the default browser and asks you to agree to the licensing (or something or other). On this browser page is an option 'Do not show this page on next startup'.
In the previous version I had, which was posted here (MediaCoder_PE_0.6.0.0_PR4.paf.exe), this setting was saved for use on each subsequent launch. Now it does not. I get the following in the browser when clicking with or without the 'do not show' box.
is the address and it is a 'cannot find server' title for the browser.
This leaves the application minimized to the SysTray.
Also, I can't seem to get it to locate my FirefoxPortable, I tried
..\..\..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe and
..\..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe and
..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
System Specs:
Win2K PRO SP4
Administrative Rights
Domain Login
/s/ When life turns your dreams to dust, vacuum
I'm not able to reproduce your error, whatever I do. That's quite odd. Let's see if anyone else gets that error too. It sounds like an issue with MediaCoder itself, not the portable version.
And for the Firefox Portable, just use ..\..\..\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe. That should work just fine.

Few things:
1)I wish this software wouldn't nag and put ads :(.
2)You might want to pangout the pictures.
3)The launcher is old (I think)
4)How can the MediaCoder source be found on the Stellarium Portable HomePage?
Other than that, I think this'll be a very good app to be official 8).
(I am not very good with reviews)
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
1. Sorry
2. I did
3. It's up-to-date for what I need
4. I have a bad attention span
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
I was able to pangout about 20 *.png s.
At least it's all UPX'ed (boy, I wish there was a better way).
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
Odd. Well, I'll be sure to fix that when fixing the Stellarium Portable thing.

There's only 11 png files in MediaCoder Portable and their total size is ~50KB.
Are you guys talking about the correct app?

I installed the latest version of MediaCoder (which looks pretty good) and when I launched it I received the following error window "Unable to access registry for font information."
MediaCoder then opened up Internet Explorer and took me to the MediaCoder site (www.mediacoderhq.com)
But, while all of this was going on the program still launched and seems to run fine. Not quite sure why it was trying to get font information from the registry as a "true PortableApp" shouldn't be trying to access the registry (I hope).
Paulf
Again, another odd problem I can't reproduce. What OS are you using?
MediaCoder really shouldn't be accessing the registry, so I don't know what the problem could be.
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
I'm running this on my office machine (IBM Thinkpad X60) running Windows XP service pack 1 (Our IT people haven't upgraded to SP2 yet) with 2 Gb of RAM.
I'll try it at home tonight on my desktop machine (XP with SP2) and report as to whether or not I had the same problem.
I tried it out on my home machine and it seemed to run fine, although it did load up Internet Explorer and went to the Mediacoder homepage. One thing, just for your information, I run ZoneAlarm Pro as my firewall and it gave me an alert that Mediacoder was attempting to access the "trusted" zone. Not a portability issue (actually the accessing the Internet seems to be more of a portability issue) but I thought you might like to know about this.
Can someone check the language of the included mplayer?
Seems like its scandinavian language
Logan:
You're correct, the language the included mplayer uses is Swedish. To correct this just install mplayer and then copy the file MPUI.exe over the same file in your MediaCoder directory (MediaCoderPortable\App\MediaCoder\codecs). If you installed Mplayer with the english menus then the MPUI.exe will be the correct one for you.
I just did this with MediaCoder and it worked.
I still do not understand why MediaCoder Portable insists on going to the MediaCoder website, as this could be a problem if the machine you're using doesn't have internet access.
Internet access...
This tool uses some configuration through the browser (FireFox apparently)
Not really my cup of tea
For me it's english
i did install over the old one though, maybe that might've influenced it
Seeing as going the the MediaCoder site at the beggining is absolutely pointless and annoying if you're not connected to the internet, just use these settings with the noWelcome key as your prefs.xml file in DefaultData.
Ok, I lied, I can't paste it because of the formatting, but just run MediaCoder once, copy the Data\settings\prefs.xml to App\DefaultData\settings after checking 'Do not show me this page again' on the site.
I'll put that up within the hour.

Are there any complaints with this version? I'd like to see if John thinks it's ready for release.

Porterkm:
MediaCoder's not going to the startup page anymore but it is still going up to the Internet and now accessing the "Update Checking" page to see if I am running the latest version. Not a big deal just a minor annoyance.
From what I see, I really can't change that, so that might be a problem for some. It's a MediaCoder thing, not a MediaCoder Portable thing.
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
I dont know if it is a bug in your launcher or just MediaCoder itself, but it seems like you can only convert about 10 small clips before it eventually crashes, sometimes fewer depending on the codec you use.

I really have never had that problem. I'll update MediaCoder tonight with the latest version, which should fix some bugs.

I have this error occur on every start up:
Unable to access registry for system font information.
Hope can fix soon
PortableApps.com Advocate
Hi,
just started playing with this a bit more seriously, and I've discovered a minor issue with the PAF compliance for the launcher.
It appears that a couple of the xml files it generates are being left in the app folder instead of the data folder.
Specifically,
PortableApps/MediaCoderPortable/App/MediaCoder/filelist.xml
PortableApps/MediaCoderPortable/App/MediaCoder/rss.xml
filelist.xml is the settings file that stores the current list of jobs
rss.xml is the cache for the news articles in the bottom pane.
filelist.xlm should definitely be in
PortableApps/MediaCoderPortable/Data/Settings
and I think rss.xml should be somewhere similar.
Great app though, really useful portably, thanks
MediaCoder Portable has been updated. I've upgraded to version 0.6.1.4106, which should fix some bugs and add some additional functionality. It should fix some of the above highlighted bugs, and it fixes some PAF compliance issues.
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
Just tried the updated version, and it appears to be disastrously broken.
When I try to add files to the processing list, I get an error stating that "mplayer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close", although the file does seem to add to the list.
When I try to start the transcoding process, I get a similar popup about mencoder.exe having crashed, followed by a message that no file has been written.
I've tried it on files that the previous version worked with, and even files that it produced.
I get exactly the same errors whether I update over the top of my old install, or clean install into a fresh directory.
Going back to 0.6.1.4068 dev test 3 seems to work fine again, though.
On the plus side, the new one did correctly move those XML settings files that I mentioned
Edit: many of the dll and exe files included have exactly the same date/time stamps between the two versions, but different sizes (smaller in the new one) Is it possible that you've UPXed it using different settings?
If it's something with the portable version, I'll look into it. It appears this was an issue with MediaCoder itself, fixed in the 0.6.1.4110. I'll see if I can update it tonight, if not I'll do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply
some of the problems folks are having.
So far, it's working good for me.
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
I am really glad that we are working on this one. I was hesitant at first because of the size. Then I realized it would replace both Bonkenc and MPlayer. (I kept the MPlayer launcher and changed the .ini to open MPUI within Mediacoder directory).
So far I have transcoded a few music files: ALAC, and WMA-lossles to LAME mp3. Here are my issues with the program so far:
Again, I really like this app and I hope we can work out the bugs so everyone can enjoy it. Thanks, Kevin for getting this going.
I've released MediaCoder Portable 0.6.1.4112 Development Test 1.
I think I've figured out the problem with the registry access error. It should only occur when on a Vista machine, not on XP or below. I can't test my theory, but I'd like some feedback. Thanks

You're right. Thanks.
About the file version, it's supposed to be the launcher version, not the version of the application itself. The current launcher version (AFAIK) is 1.5.8.0. John may have released a new version, but I'm not sure.

...still occurring. I am using XP.
On a positive note, I no longer get the error about firefox not responding.
Are you under a limited account?
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
Yes, to answer your question, I am using a limited account. My point is that I hoped it wouldn't need to access the registry in this way, or atleast not pop up an error each time it is run. But hey, if I have to live with this little bugger I will. I am really a fan of this application and I greatly appreciate you working on making it portable.
I'm almost positive it's an issue with not being able to access the registry because it's running without administrative privileges. Try out the latest release and see if that fixes it, but that's all I can help.
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
I'm also getting "Unable to access registry for system font information." I have the absolute latest version.
While rooting around in the preferences I noticed something under the Subtitle preferences, where the option "Subtitle font path" or something can be given a path to a font to use for subtitling. I rerouted this to a font I have on my flash drive.
This did not fix the problem.
This is a Vista issue. It happens because MediaCoder is trying to access an area of the registry that is off-limits to standard users. With UAC turned on, even administrator accounts run in limited mode by default.
