Stickies Portable Dev2

Application: Stickies
Category: Office
Description: Stickies is a note taking app similar to PNotes. Although Stickies is not open source I originally made the launcher just for myself because I use it so much. I remembered there was an interest in the past for a stickies launcher but it was never done. So here it is. The installer includes the Application with permission from Tom Revell (the creator of stickies). I posted an update to the stickies launcher. Tom Revell has also agreed to host stickies portable with the original app. He has agreed to host everything and allow us to promote the launcher as our own provided we give him credit for his own app.

StickiesPortableDev2

Release Notes:
To conform to the portable app standards I have removed the app from the launcher. You can download that from. Zhorn Software

Development Test 2 (2008-04-23): Test 2

  • Now stickies portable will assotiate itself with .sti and .ssk files.
  • Two new PortableApps.com themes for stickies. Yes two, one by me and one by Devo. Mine is the black one that is set to be used as deault. The other can be used by going into the Data => Skins.
  • Will now listen to keyboard short cuts.

Development Test 1 (2008-03-18): Initial release

I'm not sure why but you need to right click and click save target as to download.

P.S. Devo commented that he had made a skinner launcher too (the app used to make skins for stickies). I have also made one but didn't think anyone was interested. If anybody's interested I can post that one too.

I'd say this is a copyright

I'd say this is a copyright violation of JohnTH's code. Sorry, it violates the GPL.

Just remove the app and tell people where to download it.

Yep

The installer is for Open Source apps only, Jacob. As well, you can't post closed source apps in this forum yet, only a launcher.

Not Yet

We're not doing closed source yet but will be soon. Hold on to your launcher code. You'll be able to use the full PortableApps.com Installer with logo when we're ready.

Also, I don't know if we need to be doing a freeware post it not app when we have a working, supported open source one that we can host for free. Is there anything particularly compelling about stickies over the current PNotes Portable release?

A Couple Reasons

I use Stickies over PNotes for a couple of reasons. First, Stickies has an alarm function that allows you to hide a note until a specified time. I know PNotes has this option, but it is hidden in the options. Second, Stickies has many more options and can be shared with other people over a network. It also has the ability to be synced with your PDA. I would suggest just checking it out, you can find it on portablefreeware.com

Overall, Stickies is a lot less crowded too. There aren't a ton of buttons on the note. This is just a preference issue, but I think it would be great to at least have a launcher for the app. I know it doesn't need one, and I already use it on my flash drive, but I like having things in the paf format.

I agree with you

Plus, I use both Apps, one for personal stuff (PNotes) and the other one for Professional stuf (stickies), the difference is the one I launch at home, Office and public places...

Besides, we have two Instant Messengers, two (or more) Text editors, two multimedia players, more than two games (this last was a joke), etc, etc... I think is just a matter of user's decisions/options.

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

Alright Fair enough I will wait.

If somebody wants it I would be happy to email the launcher code to them. I realize that we have Pnotes. But I'm not really a fan of it (No offense.) Stickies is just a little cleaner and has some extra features that I can't seem to get over. Manage stickies in a notebook like thingy, network as stated above, alarms again stated above, and the option to only open if a specific window is open.

Well,

You can post the stand alone launcher here, and post a link to the regular app.

I suggest you write your own

I suggest you write your own Installer and Launcher (You can use my launcher if you want) to make a legal version of this portable application. Before people start bashing about copyright and trademark violations.

If the app uses any copyrighted graphics like install image, splash screen and graphics in the help.html, remove or replace them from your distribution. Then offer the installer to the original developer to host it and voila, no legal issues people could start complaining about.

The downside of the PortableApps launcher and installer scripts is that the license with the current exception for use with non GPL apps is ONLY if PortableApps.com distributes it. That's a big let down and thus the installer will not be useful for apps other than 'official' PortableApps.com distributions. ("EXCEPTION: Can be used with non-GPL apps distributed by PortableApps.com") A bit discriminatins I think..

Anyway, good to see developers support Portable Applications (and PortableApps.com) .

PS. NSIS is licensed under the zlib/libpng license which allows commercial use. "Permission is granted to anyone to use this software for any purpose, including commercial applications"

The launcher is my own.

It's not a reconstruction of anything else. I made my own from scratch minus looking at other launchers to see how they did something. I will make an installer as soon as I can.

Nice

I suggest you email the author and ask him. He is a nice guy and I guess he will host your portable version. At least thats what he did with the one I made a year ago (Birthday Reminder).

Just a suggestion.

I posted it and then I saw that hosting isn't the problem...

Just two comments regarding

Just two comments regarding the launcher;
The launcher expects the stickies executable to be in the Apps directory under the Stickies directory.

1-I'd suggest changing the top level directory to StickiesPortable to better distinguish your work from the original author.
2-The usual use of the Apps directory is to hold a sub-directory with the application, e.g., a Stickies directory under Apps. As I tried this first and it didn't work, you may want to modify the launcher to avoid comments or rejection by others who don't try it both ways.

Developer Hosting

Hey Jacob. Glad to see you got the developer's permission. Would he be interested in hosting the binary and promoting the PAF version here as well as there? Since it seems people are fans of this app, maybe it would be a good candidate for our freeware rollout.

Actually he wanted us to promote it.

In his own his own licence it says you can distribute it however you want. He doesn't care so long as you stay within a few parameters. He likes the .paf launcher and is willing to let us distribute it however we want provided we don't charge anything.

Edit: I just sent an email to see if he will host it for us. I think he will.
