Is this... official? And what's the point?
Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
Yes, John just recommended it, so it's fairly official.
And,
The Beta Testing Team is simply a group of well established, and fairly experienced users and developers that have volunteered their time to thoroughly test the applications that are posted in Beta Testing.
That's the point.
The point is to have a group of established developers and advanced users ready to sign off on whether an app is ready to move up the official chain. If it's a Development Test, then is it ready for official status. If it's a pre-release, then are we sure it's ready to go. Etc. We may form a mailing list to ping people. Or just wait until a certain number sign off on a given app test and label it ready, etc. This is for discussion along these lines. Ideas, etc.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
we are on the topic of mailing lists, is there any chance of a moderators list (or a private forum)? I can see it becoming quite handy as the member base grows and we get the new powers. Also could the other mods email me I could do with your addresses, I am steve(dot)lamerton(at)gmail(dot)com
I believe private forums are supported in Drupal 6. But a mailing list might be better to ensure everyone reads things.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I think there's also a plugin for Drupal to provide more forum functionality (private), if they're not supported in 6.
Having a group of people to test is great. I myself aren't that of a great tester. I sometimes copy some PortableBetas and usually I only notice when they are just not working. I rarely check the whole folder lay out (hmm I know even an official app that has no folder structure at all) and I never check if something is in the registry. Sometimes I check for folders left behind..
Before we know it someone makes a small app that does an automated search on the registry and computer to see if there any entries left behind based on the app's name
Cheers to all devoted PortablePeople!
the circle?
I'd like to.
And I think a mailing list on Sourceforge would be good as a reminder and as a way to get in touch which can be rally helpful. I think it isn't needed as a lot of us are here anyhow but I think it would be good anyhow.

in, put me under 'Program Recompilation & Cross Platform Support' i.e. if you are looking at recompiling your program I'll help out (after all I managed QEMU). Not sure if we are sanctioning cross platform yet, but I'll help out when we do, after all I have been working towards Toucan linux support for 2.0. I'll also do WINE testing if needed.

John, do you think we could create a thread that lists the apps that are in Development Test, but are ready to go except for splash screen and your signature? This way it would all be in one location, easier for you, and others, to find.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
something like this but with the ability to add comments and a mod can put the app you mentioned in you comment into the list and deletes the comment?
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
kind of. that is (or should be) a list of all the apps in testing, what I'm looking for is a list of apps that have completed the testing phase and are only waiting for John's side of things. But yes, your description is very similar to what I'm suggesting.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
Why not just keep Ryan's Wiki page up to date, and link to that? It's not official, but it could still be up to date until there is an official one.
Maybe there could be a simpler set of codes for the status column, so it is more obvious which ones are ready to be considered for release and which are still being tested. (For myself, I'd like to see "development test nn" replaced with "release candidate nn" after it has been polished and tested enough -- or else use some other classification at the beginning of the development phase so "development test" means the same as "this has been tested thoroughly and vetted by the beta testing team, so it is ready to get onto John's todo list.)
MC
That's a good idea. I like the idea of changing it to release candidate after it's ready to go, and we do need a simpler set of codes for the status. Whenever Ryan comes back we'll try to get something going.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I'm back
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
I think that's a good idea. And all the Apps that are ready can be marked in some way and Ryan can put them on the list on the DevelopmentTest page.

would like to get in on the testing team. I've not been a member here for all that long, but I've lurked here and used the apps for better that a year and a half.
I have been very interested in what is going on. I usually check it daily.
S.O.G.
I haven't actually registered until now, though I've found the betas and the development very useful. Been using the site for about 2 years. Though, I regret not saying anything. Got a bit more active recently, as in starting to test regulary.
There's nothing special about me, I simply like testing things. Just as blowing things up. You try something and get to see the result. If I could join I'd probably like to have a tagline along the lines of a tester. Though, support and translating is really something I enjoy, so if there is a plan of translating PortableApps.com into other language.. then atleast sign me up for that.

There is localization/translation stuff over here. If you just plan on translating that's perfectly fine. If you wish to be added to the list of testers, we can do that too, just let us know.
Thanks for your interest, and welcome to the forums.

Yes, I'd love to join the testing team.

Hey Zach, stop making 'added' and 'updated' comments. For one, they're not needed (people can see when their added). But the more important reason is that they're multiple short duplicative comments and the spam filter is automatically tagging them.

Any thoughts on whether we should have folks monitor the RSS Feed, watch the forum, setup a mailing list or do a special newsletter (essentially just to ping people about big stuff)?
Not as many people watch the forums as needed, really, as evidenced by the Pidgin Portable 2.3.1 Pre-Release. Even though it's a big and anticipated release, it's only gotten 5 comments in 24 hours.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I think for something like a testing team, a mailing list would be good, just to say something along the lines of "app so and so is in Development Test or Pre-Release status, check it out and report back via comment on the thread". RSS might be nice too, I need to get more into that, it's really handy and easy to use, I just dont lol
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I think that a mailing list would be best, I would have thought that people would be more likly too take notice of an email than from a feed. A mailing list would also allow the other developers to post out updates.
agree.
"What about Love?" - "Overrated. Biochemically no different than eating large quantities of chocolate." - Al Pacino in The Devils Advocate
I agree as well.
I can access e-mail at school, but PortableApps itself is blocked, so RSS wouldn't work there.
I single-handedly managed to get it blocked b/c I visited it every day.
Nice!
that should go in the school computer complains forum

It's amazing that I download from SourceForge everyday, but I put a proxy on my server to check out that AnonymityAnywhere site one time, and my site gets blocked.
Definitely a mailing list, but I would not mind an RSS feed as well.

This is a vote against a mailing list unless I can make up and use a different email addy for it (not the one I registered here under). My current one is semi-swamped.

There where many beta tests here with software which worked very well and them didn`t become official. That`s a pity.
So imho it`s a very good to put some skilled people in a team an let them judge. Other people are still allowed to post feedback which will be confirmed.
Yup, John asked me to create this group so we have a set of experienced eyes checking out newly developed portable apps. Many of the apps posted in beta testing are being reworked to the latest PAF specs, and the Development Test apps will most likely all become official, it will take lots of time and lots of testing though.

the whole thread and still don't get why a "specific team" but... I have been testing betas since the beginning, of course I don't check if something is left in the registry but I check everything else, so if you want to add me to your list, is just a name/charge for something some of us have been doing for long time...
BTW, real name is in my profile I think.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report
The purpose of the team is to have a group of people that are basically promising to test every app that's posted have they the time, average Joe can test if he's interested, but we're not relying on him to check certain things.
I'm sorry, but this is not for me...
I'll cooperate just doing translations.
Regards,
Average Joe

I hereby declare my resignation from the Beta Testing Team.
Could you please remove me from the list? I think testing is important but I don't have the time to do it as thorough as I think it has to be done so I'd rather stop doing it. I will post anything I will find but I cant guarantee for nothing. I spent too much time here lately and have other things to do now.

I've been gone for a while, and i'm gonna be gone for another 2-4 weeks
Do you have a note?
Will a C# work for you?
Sorry guys, I'm missing the 'Team' part here. It looks like it's mainly just a few of us testing. I understand many of you are busy, but if you are busy so much that you can't at least test a few apps a week, please remove yourself from the list above.
But really, I'd like to check settings and everything for these apps I'm testing, and I can't do it all alone. I have my specific role I have been trying to fulfill the best I can with my limited internet and digitxp posting 13 apps a week.
So please guys, I know some of you are busy, others only need to help time to time like NeoRame and Ryan. But please, try to test more, or remove yourself from the list. And if you do, no one will be disappointed, but I'd rather have the list actually show the real contributing team.
Thanks.
I have little time, but my role is fairly specialised, could I be turned into request only? If you want someone to test under Linux it is easier to specifically ask as there is no way that I will be able to do all of them.
EDIT: My Ubuntu virtual machine seems to have messed up, but I am still interested in helping out if anyone wants help recompiling their base app.
That'd be great. I agree it is fairly specialized. That'll be handy right before official releases. Maybe test any app that goes in Pre-Release. Currently GnuCash and BonkEnc.
Edit: Speaking of recompilation. Wanna try and recompile Tennix 0.6.1 when you get a chance? I don't think anyone's doing Windows builds anymore, so you could contribute yours when you get a chance. I may have a try, too.
like a plan, as for Tennix it should be fairly straight forward, I already have MinGW, MSYS & SDL installed from when I did QEMU, so I'll give it a go right now!
Thanks very much!
There will be no "team" until the inter-personal communication is setup as specified above...meaning some way to communicate better with each other OTHER than this forum.

I have quite a few beta apps in my flashdrive, and plenty of room to spare. I have access to a school windows XP PC, and my home XP PC. I also have plenty of thime to kill. I also notice some small things every now and then with the development list, and programs. Like the readme in Thunderbird's plugin folder says to put addons for firefox there.
