Is there this kind fo desktop program?

I'm looking for a desktop program with some features, can anyone give me some suggestions?

Features:
1. Create a virtual desktop with wallpaper from flash drive.
2. Customizable favorite folders and shortcuts on desktop, including both relative and absolute path. Softwares like ms office which most people have can be run from the local computer.
3. Switch the local desktop and your desktop.
4. Customizable workarea. You can set some space for showing widgets, and maximized windows won't cover this space. DesktopCoral(http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/desktopcoral/index.html) does this, but only does this, too.
5. Sidebar and dock. Bigger buttons and info are easier to click and read.
6. Mouse gesture or hot spot to bring given windwos or widgets to front.

Haha. So many features. I guess there is no such a program, but what do you think?

Try a new shell

Maybe you should try a new shell. Most shells are designed to run in place of Explorer, which means you have to change registry entries and stuff like that. LiteStep can run on top of Explorer. I use it to have a Virtual Desktop and custom pop-up window widget.

LiteStep has a lot of modules including hotspots, docks, shortcuts, VWM (virtual desktops), wallpaper changsers, system trays, taskbars. They aim to totally replace Explorer, so you will find attempts to mimic just about every Explorer feature.

LiteStep isnt easy to configure though. I had to make my own "theme" that didnt include a system tray or taskbar (since it's running over Exploer, not replacing it).

Check out www.litestep.com and www.litestep.net. The projects been at a standstill for years, but it looks like development might be picking up again.

This may not be perfect, but....

This program launches full screen. I haven't played with it much cuz it seems more of an outlook type program than a desktop type program. Check it out and tell me if I should give it a second look.

Thanks man. It looks nice. I would like to try it, but you have to be invited to get indi. Too bad. -_- I already join the list. If I am picked, I will post comments in this forum.

Forgot to mention there is a flash drive called "taango" having some kind of portable computer or virtual computer funtion built in. Just google "taango". The company seems to give a 15-day-trail taango software. I personally think most features of taango are not what I need, so I didn't try it.

Indi...

I signed up for the beta and got an invite almost immediately, so it shoudl be easy for others to get it as well. Now on to my opinion of the software:

This seems more like an organizing app to me, yeah you can use the plugins to add functionality, but I am not sure I would be willing to pay even the $5.00 or so they are asking. It has a calendar, a todo list, and other organzer features. Allowing you to IM the other users of the software was a good touch. I like that idea, they just need to extend that to other IM services. Which I believe is underway.

They also have file storage. As for that,I like to know where my files go, and from what I can see, when you import files into the program for your use, they get stored in a database of sorts. to put them in another location you need to export them out of the program. Not the most proficient way of doing things in my book. bUt for a security point of veiw they are locked from veiw if you do not have the password to start the app. Also I found that if you open a file from within the program, it will save a copy of it under a folder called OpenedItems on the root of the indi app folder, I believe it is supposed to be temporary as it uses a random set of numbers as a folder, but they do not delete on shutdown. This alone defeats the purpose of the security lock. If the files are located within the databse to secure them, then the OpenedItems folder should be too.

Now this is a beta program, and I am still playing around with it, but it does have its problems and inconveniences in my mind. Just my opinion. I will continue to watch this program and see where it ends up.

Also, this is not a desktop per se it will not allow you to make shortcuts to other programs and run them, that is why I see it as an organizer not a desktop.

Again, Just my opinion.

I'll watch indi, but currently it's not what I want and need.
I need something like a desktop, but idni's not, just like what Deuce said.
Besides, there are already many softwares covering most of indi's features.
Let's see how will it go.

By the way, Deuce, are you used to be a mugen creator?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, just don't mind.
There may be many ppl called Deuce. Smile

Litestep

Has anyone had any luck with making Litestep portable? It would be great if I could literally take my desktop with me - shortcuts and all. Litestep is opensource...*hint* *hint* Wink

I have an alternative. I use

I have an alternative. I use MojoPac (www.mojopac.com) It runs its own instance of WinXP on any portable USB device.

I plug my iPod into any WinXP PC, and I run whatever application I installed on my iPod. I have iTunes on my iPod, FireFox, MS Office... even World of Warcrfat runs on it. And all that without any noticeable performance hit.

That would be great!
Even to be able to (temporarily) switch the wallpaper to one that's on the USB drive would be cool.
