TrueCrypt

It is Open source, so I think it would be the perfect addon.

Please search before posting....TrueCrypt has been discussed multiple times, and the simple answer is NO.

It requires administrator privileges to encrypt/decrypt, and it has to install a driver to do so.

Sorry

I checked the 4 most recent pages and did not see this, maybe I should have searched more.

Yes, it makes sense, however it is useful and I think it requires admin rights to create a volume, not to decrypt, and it is a nice "on the go" feature.

It requires admin rights to do both encrypt and decrypt, so the "on the go" feature is pretty much useless unless u know that all the machines you'll visit have admin rights, or you won't need to access the encrypted stuff from some locations.

Actually... you need the admin rights for the device driver to mount the container...

Ok, I still would need it

Ok, I still would need it since I use several comps with admin rights, but I can understand that people are not interested in adding it to Portable Apps.

I found one that I already used, because I like it packed as a PortableApp and that this site makes instant updates when other portable software don't have that support.

I can still be fine like this.

Thanks

I think before you were

I think before you were referring to TCExplorer, which was able to drag-and-drop files in and out of containers without mounting and without admin rights. I don't think this utility has been updated for the new TC 5.x series yet.

Otherwise, TC is perfectly portable in 'Traveler Mode' as it is (I use it all the time). I mean, it's not in PAF format, but it doesn't need to be either. But it really is done perfectly, there's not additional cleanup that would/could be done.

If you want TC integration

then look up geek.menu - it alrady has excellent integration for portable apps on a truecrypt volume.

And, sadly, TCExplorer is an unmaintained application, so it is exceedingly unlikely that it will become able to cope with 5.x containers any time soon.

And, before you start emailing anyone about that issue. The guy that wrote TCExplorer only wrote the wrapper for a command line utility that does the file operations.

The guy that wrote the command line util did it in a weekend for someone on a forum, and had no interest in ever supporting it, and the guys at TrueCrypt itself, feel that the app is "inappropriate" since if you don't have admin rights, then you can't trust the machine, and shouldn't be decrypting on it anyway.

..

"it is dangerous thing since it does people encourage to use computers in admin rights."
No it doesn't, it requires people to INSTALL the application or driver as "admin"
and that's how it should be.
The fact that many private users are running as admin is solely to blame on microsoft.

why is it safer to use your computer in admin mode? Is it any use to create a second account?

I think he said it is better

I think he said it is better to install software as Admin. After the software is installed, it should be used as a normal user ... which implies it can be used as a normal user, which is simply not the case with a lot of Windows software.

Truecrypt is one of the exceptions. Once the driver has been installed (as an admin) there is not much that a normal user cannot do with her encrypted volume. (I think the limits are something like creating new NTFS volumes or something like that.)
