Password Start Up Like U3

On U3 drive it prompts a password before you can access anything which keeps your personal files protected. I was requesting if someone can make something like that or if there is any app like that

Then your only option

is to buy a drive with hardware security.

There are exactly two ways to secure a flash drive

1) Encrypt the contents.

2) use hardware security.

There is simply no other alternative. Any system that claims to use software to protect a drive without encryption offers no more protection than putting a sticky label on the drive saying "Please do not read my files." Anything other than a good encryption system is trivial to get around.

Yep ..

..and even if your drive has "security-features"
ie a "public" and a "private" passworded partition you still
need admin-rights to mount the "private" one so you
might as well use truecrypt and get some REAL security .

well

true crype can do that. but in order to access your password protected drives you need admin rights.

Na na na, come on!

Password startup like U3

It is undoubtedly that 'must have' feature! I have just removed U3 and setup PA launcher, and do miss the password function.

I noticed Toucan contains some more straight forward encryption tools, has anyone used that in the same way as TrueCrypt i.e. dual partition, one for boot and Toucan; one for encrypted file store?

well...

for me, since i dont feel like using u3 all the time, i secure all of my files with a standard windows zipped folder. it is quite clever actually, first you make the folder, then add all of the files that you want and after taht you enter the folder and File>Add A Password. after doing that, people will be able to see the files themselves but will be unable to acsess the files without the password as it is required on acsess of the file. there is absolutely no way for anyone but the password holder to acsess the files. althogh it wont secure your entire drive, it will protect essentials.

also, you could try getting the full version of folder lock and make it portable since it can lock entire drives.

I hope there isn't anything too important in that zip

There are some interesting articles on zip passwords on the net. I'm not going to post any links since they're a little too close to being hacking tools and not really what this site is about.

Due to the way ZIP files store the CRC for each file in the header, there are tools out there that can find just about any zip password (even one that is dozens of random characters) in a matter of hours, if there are a number of files in the zip.

Zip encryption is good to stop accidental access by curious bystanders, but if someone actually wants your data, it will barely even slow them down.

Newer implementations of the

Newer implementations of the ZIP file format container support AES encryption, which is also used by TrueCrypt and KeePass.

true, but....

as I said, due to the way zips store internal data, there are known attacks against zip encryption, based on known plaintext techniques, and on the verifiability of portions of the decrypt.

zip encryption yes but,

not the now implmented aes etc.
Against the classical zip encryption, which was quite well done, but the plaintext attacks were published later in most relevant literature sources.

This does not apply this way for aes , since this is entirely other thing.

Yeah but

when you unzip your files, you let a pretty little collection of your personal-secret-hidden files in the host PC Temp folder... What's the security in that? That is worst than just keep your Thumb drive in your pocket... Wink

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

I Like Toucan

7-Zip can encrypt your personal files and help save a little space in the process. It uses AES-256 and you can also encrypt the file names if you want. I use Toucan for encrypting personal documents. It would be nice to have the entire drive locked down and even prevent it from being formatted without a password, but it's not like they can't go online and download all the apps found on my drive, so I wouldn't really be keeping them from anything. A few family photos, open office documents, and a few family video clips are all I'm worried about, and Toucan does an adequate job of protecting those files. Perhaps someday our thumb drives will require a thumb print to access the drive.

Biometric Drives are already available

Well protecting the drives by your thumb prints - You are then talking of biometric drives which are already available in the market. They are made by Kangaro, I guess. Just google for it.

But definitely, they are available.

Easy to crack

Such drives with fingerprint readers are available, but some are easy to crack.

Biometric Drives

Thanks for the info vkv.raju and r.andom. I didn't know there was already something like this out there and wouldn't mind having a biometric thumb drive eventually, but I'm in no hurry.

This may help...

You may want to check out LockNGo by Keynesis.com...

"Lockngo™ encrypts and password protects flash drives, portable hard drives, removable disk and portable external hard drive. Lockngo™ secures removable drives by encrypting their file systems and hiding their content. When locked, Lockngo™ does not allow to write new files and does not show the locked data. Lockngo™ can secure any disk size in seconds."

Why do I feel like I just got spammed ?

Maybe it's the "TM"-crap, maybe it's the fact that you had
to use the appname"TM" in every line ?
Anyway, I'm guessing the above post is a violation of the self-promotion rule besides being marketing spam for a closed-source pay-app .
