changing .paf a bit to get an portableapps updater?

I suggest to change the .paf format a bit. Don`t worry there will be 100 % backward compatibly.

All my portableapps are on one folder on my hd, other people will also do this in a similar way.

Let`s add a new file or in an existing file a new entry. But the version info in a standardized way into it.

From there it`s easy to make an error resident updater. The updater downloades the version info from a special page from portableapps.com / sf.net or any other good hosting (signed message in usenet if you worry about traffic).

Once you start the updater and click "scan my folder" all files with version info will be opened and checked. If there are updates just inform the user (or later download it if he want).

No.

It will not be done because,

1. Every app on the site, including apps that are being created by new developers, would have to be reprogrammed to the new format.
2. This is like saying, "I want cup holders in my car, so instead of bringing in regular ones, I'll buy a new car".
3. There is a PortableApps updater available. https://portableapps.com/node/12040

Do you have to power to have so early the final verdict about that?

No need to reprogram anything. Just if there is a new version add the new file. Isn`t a big deal

>>2. This is like saying, "I want cup holders in my car, so instead of bringing in regular ones, I'll buy a new car".
I don`t understand what you want to say with that sentence.

I wasn`t aware of this one yet but I will check it later.

My aim is to become an official updater. Will this updater become official?

Yes

Like Stevoisiak , I don't have the power to say the final word , but I think that the updater will become official. Its a good idea you had and thats exactly the way it is done. Every Application has a simple ini file with its name, version number and some other info in it. So all the Updater has to do for each Application is to check if there is an App downloadable with the same name and a higher version number.

Yes. So this suggestion is

Yes. So this suggestion is already implemented. The fundamentals for an portableapps updater.

So, is there any official updater planed? I think at this state it would be worth.

Explamation

For that car explamation, I think changing the format is a difficult sulution to a simple problem. If you want to update your apps, the updater app will do the trick.
