AbiWord Portable 2.6 Pre-Release 2 (Quick Test Needed For Release Tomorrow)

AbiWord Portable 2.6 has been released. Thanks for testing!
https://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable

I've just posted a pre-release of AbiWord Portable 2.6. This new release features a few updates to the launcher and installer that I'd like to confirm work properly for everyone before pushing this out for general uses.

First off, the installer will update your existing AbiWord.profile to ensure that it is set to auto load plugins on launch. In 2.4, AbiWord handled this value differently. So, if you're upgrading an existing 2.4 install to 2.6, the installer will change AutoLoadPlugins="0" to AutoLoadPlugins="1" in the custom scheme section.

Second off, the installer now features the ability to install only the English files a la GIMP, Pidgin, etc. In AbiWord's case, it makes enough of a difference allowing English users to have a small 7.75MB install instead of the 14.9MB that AbiWord Portable 2.6 takes. The installer will automatically remove the existing language strings and help files or add them depending on your selection.

Third, the launcher now automatically updates AbiWord to use the user's selected language from the upcoming PortableApps.com Platform release. To test this, simply create a batch file called start.bat in the AbiWordPortable directory consisting of:

Set PortableApps.comLanguageCode=en-us
Start AbiWordPortable.exe

You can change the language code as needed to valid Language Code values. If you use one that doesn't exist in AbiWord, it'll just leave the language as is. The big thing to check is to and from english... especially on non-English Windows installs.

NOTE: Language selection won't currently work with certain 2 character language codes as AbiWord is doubling them up so they're non-standard in their strings file definitions (they use hu-HU for hungarian instead of the correct hu). I'm working on a fix to be posted later today.

Download AbiWord Portable 2.6 Pre-Release 2 [5.8MB download / 7.8-15MB installed]

Please give this a spin and post any feedback.

Thanks,
John

Nice localization idea

I got some q's about the practicality:
1)How are you going to implement it in PAM?
2)How are the devs going to implement it in existing releases w/o altering existing code?

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Directly / In Progress

It's directly implemented in the next release. The next PortableApps.com Platform sets this and other environment variables for you.

Nearly all apps are being updated to this as they are released. GIMP, Pidgin, FileZilla, InfraRecorder, PokerTH, VLC and WinDirStat all already implement language integration with the platform in their current releases. AbiWord and GnuCash do as well in their current pre-releases. We'll update the other apps as updates come along.

Well...

I've installed AbiWord (including multilingual support), added relevant dictionary for my language (danish) and created the start.bat file. Executing this file resulted in a correct, as far as I can tell (danish strings and dictionary), danish configuration af AbiWord.

Thereafter, I added a couple of extra plugins from my standard installation. Seemingly without problems as they appeared in the configuration menu and extensions present for import/export.

That's all I've tried so far.

"upgrade" on an install with plugins works

I just tried to do an upgrade on an existing install with the plugins pre-installed on Vista Ultimate SP1, and it installed without a hitch

I haven't tested the language part of it, and odds are I won't get the chance to before the release

Nice

Finally, a new AbiWord release. I (heart) Tango.

Anyways, I'll do my stuff:

  • Missing Other\Source\AppSource.txt.
  • Remove version number from Other\Source\Readme.txt.
  • Genericisize App\Readme.txt.

Who am I kidding, that's all. Smile

Besides that, it seems to be running okay. There sexy new Tango logo is in the about window, so you might wanna look around for a SVG of that to use in the splash. I'll take a look, too. Other than that, was there fix to have AbiWord Portable automaticially save to the PortableApps.com Documents folder? I've never really used it, so I don't know what the case was.

Thanks

Thanks, I'll get those in final.

I never even checked Help About... I snagged the icon from there and the splash screen is ready for the final release.

BTW - Since you like Tango, you know OpenOffice.org has a built in tango icon set now, right?

Yeah

Tools - Options - View. Set icon size and style as you wish. I keep mine on Crystal now. Tango doesn't really fit with modern black windows themes.

re-release 2 works

I just tried pre-release 2, and haven't found any problems with it.

No problems.

As with Pre-Release 1, no problems encountered.

In times of bloat it's encouraging to see, that it's possible to minimize AbiWord to less than 4MB by removing the unessentials (clipart, dictionaries, helpfiles, templates, strings, etc.).
