Digsby

I've searched the forum for a similar topic and found none. Is anyone able to make a portable launcher for Digsby (www.digsby.com)?

It seems as if the developers of Digsby don't mind if people try to run it from thumb drives: http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=114
However it does leave a few (conversation) log files and some dll files on the computer, I'm not sure about registry entries.

Any thoughts?

It seems to be in private

It seems to be in private beta, and I can't see any indication of what kind of license it will have when it is released.

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

Digsby uses

.net framework... that mean that it can't be made portable... Sad

It says that here: http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=114

Still needs .NET

Even if they make a portable version official over there, or explain how to, it will still need .NET.

Kind of off-topic but this

Kind of off-topic but this post reminded me of Spicebird. Wouldn't it be nice if there were FOSS remakes of apps that already exist? For example, Thunderbird -> Spicebird and Limewire -> Frostwire. What will they come up with next...

Huh?

Spicebird is Calendar, IM, e-mail, and more. Thunderbird is only e-mail. And Frostwire features a lot of the features of LimeWire Pro, which you would have to pay for, and read this.

What I meant was, Spicebird

What I meant was, Spicebird will be a replacement for Thunderbird once it's out of Beta. Spicebird does what Thunderbird does, and then some. Same with Frostwire. It does exactly what Limewire does, and then some because it has the features of Limewire Pro and Limewire Basic does not. So for freeware, Spicebird is better than Thunderbird and Frostwire is better than Limewire.

That's What You Think

Spicebird is fairly buggy right now, but as you said it's in beta. Lots of people just want an e-mail client, so will stick with Thunderbird, or perhaps they're possible more loyal to Thunderbird. I really don't think Spicebird will become more popular than Thunderbird. Yes, Frostwire might be better, but lots of people still feel they're getting more when they pay for something. A good number of people don't know about Frostwire, either.

Not Quite

Spicebird is Thunderbird + Lightning + xmpp4moz + additional interface enhancements. But it won't be replacing Thunderbird. Thunderbird will be paired with Lightning quite a bit once it reaches 1.0 status and will even be included with OpenOffice.org and StarOffice.

OpenOffice.org. I thought I heard something about that. Sounds kinda neat.

men...

Well maybe it's just me, but I prefer FrostWire and Spicebird and I'll continue to use them. I like the whole idea of programs being packaged together. Seems simpler to me.

I wouldn't

I definitely wouldn't suggest using SpiceBird for your real email. It's a beta release and it bundles a customized version of another beta package (Lightning). So, there could be serious issues. That's why, although I made a portable version of it, it's not officially released. I'd guess Thunderbird will probably come bundled with Lightning but not until it hits 1.0... no reason to jump the gun as there are still bugs.

I don't use it in place of

I don't use it in place of Thunderbird yet, but I plan on doing so once it is out of beta and there is a stable release

Present portable Digsby versions should NOT be trusted!

I read an entire thread on the Digsby website:
i.e. - http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?id=114

That other thread on the Digsby website does NOT give any more information than you will find here, except several people's attempts at trying to make Digsby portable, and which have proven to be not possible, yet.
That other thread just keeps on going in an endless circulation of similar posts.
In fact, this same topic was brought to Digsby's attention as long ago as 2007!
But, nothing has been done about making Digsby portable.
At least not yet!

I started to try to install a portable version that was mentioned in that other "portable version" thread.
That EXE wanted to only patch an already installed version of Digsby on my PC.
I, of course, do NOT have the regular Digsby installed, so I canceled the attempted patch.
(I am in the process of restoring my PC, so I have not reinstalled Digsby, yet.
I was waiting until I could possibly find a portable version of Digsby, but since I cannot find a trusted portable version of Digsby I can now go ahead with installing the regular version of Digsby.)

What would have been patched if I had continued with the patch?
Is it possible that the so called portable version was going to try to hijack an already installed version of Digsby?
I believe so!

So, my conclusions are this ...
There are no trusted versions of Digsby other than the regular Digsby that installs to a regular hard drive, and a U3 version of Digsby, which is portable, but can only be used on a U3 drive.
I erased my U3 software from my thumb drive, so I cannot use the U3 version.

Until Digsby makes a portable version I suggest that you do NOT trust any other so called portable version of Digsby!
Only a portable version made by Digsby should be trusted.

Hopefully, in the future, PortableApps.com and Digsby will work together to bring about a truly portable version of Digsby.
Until Digsby, or someone endorsed by Digsby, makes a genuinely portable version I suggest to you that you only use the regular version of Digsby offered on the Digsby website!
