NetHack

Program: NetHack
License: Open Source / Nethack General Public License

Description: NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.

there really aren't any

there really aren't any because it's a text-based game, and they use a random number generator to create their maps to always be slightly different.

So, the game looks like it's in notepad? I've heard of bad graphics, but that sounds ridiculous.

Graphics

Here are some links to samples of the "graphics":

Yeah, the graphics are simplistic, but that doesn't mean that it isn't fun to play.

graphics are good enough for what it does.

Though I do admit that I grew up playing Rogue. The game essentially plays directly from my usb key with one exe handling everything, opening up a dos window. Nethack is more complicated and better or just more complicated?

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Nethack

You can play nethack with tile graphics, and there are people who have even made 3d graphics for Nethack. Nethack (especially Slash'em and some of the forks) are extremely complex and original. Don't let the graphics fool you.

Nihilism makes me smile.

Project Revival?

Pardon me for reviving an old thread, but I just got int NetHack myself & was wondering about getting a portable version.

Since the game files are stored on SourceForge, there shouldn't be any issues with licensing.

Pretty much 3 issues come to mind:

1) Game settings -- This is a minor issue as these settings are stored in "default.nh" next to the game, but can become an issue when applying Portable Apps structure to it.

2) Graphics -- Cosmetic issue... just an extra download for the game & the Portable Apps dev team can do that.

3) Save File Issues -- Major issue... The save files for Nethack use the " - " naming system. This can cause major issues for players as each system can have a different username active, which forces the player to start a new game instead of resuming a previously saved game.

Unless somebody really want to edit the source code, these will have to be solved by the portable dev group.

answers: 1. that can be

answers:
1. that can be handled by a variation of the notepad++ or the sumatraPDF launchers.
2. since i was going to do this ages ago, but ran into some issues, i think i'll take it up again. but yes, i would include the extra 32-bit tile pack.
3. this was the problem, but my brain is now thinking a little better, and i will get back to it tonight.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
