Hey - new here. I have TB Portable on a flash drive. It works great on my laptop but when I tried to use it on my PC at work it just searches but won't download any mail. Any ideas? TIA - Kari

If it's a POP, you need to make sure that you check the "Leave Messages on the Server" box under "Server Settings". If one copy of TB pulls all the messages off of the server and doesn't leave them there, there is nothing for the other copy of TB to get.
It would be great if further releases of TB and PTB would check the box by default in case one forgets.
Then there is probably a firewall at work that blocks access to POP email - it is quite a common one to restict to stop people checking their personal emails on company time.
Thanks for the replies. It's a POP account that I normally access at work via a browser. I know there are messages to be downloaded because when TB wouldn't I used the browser method and found 26.
It opens fine and shows what's there from when I last opened it on my laptop. A small bar appears at the bottom of the sceen that looks like it's searching for the server but then it stops. Is there a way to get past that? TIA Kari
You can check for certain as follows...
open up a command prompt on the work PC, by clicking Start-->Run and entering cmd.exe in the dialog box that pops up.
At the command prompt, enter the command telnet my.pop.mail.server 110 substituting the full host name of your pop mailserver in the obvious place, and making sure that you remember the 110 on the end of the command.
If it is working, you will get something like
displayed on screen. The key thing is that the line starts with +OK If it does look something like this, then you do not have a firewall problem.
If there is a firewall problem, then you will get a failed to connect, or timeout message instead, and the only way to resolve it will be to talk to your network administrators to see if they will allow you access.

What version of Windows are you running on?
If it was cmd.exe that didn't work, try command.com instead.
Alternatively, you could download Portable Putty from this site, use your mail server as the host, select telnet from the protocol options, and type 110 as the port in that, and try connecting. That would give basically the same results.
Well, I'm not having much luck on any front here. I'm running XP on both machines. command.com netted the same results as cmd.exe. I downloaded Putty, did a quick tour and couldn't get past the first page. I actually tried every connection type.
The most likely reason for not being able to run a command prompt is that the machine's administrator has locked it down. That would be another pointer that it is likely to be a policy that has been set on the company's firewall that is stopping you.
To use PuTTY for this, you need to do the following steps
1) run putty
2) type your mail server name in the host name box at the top
3) Select Telnet as the protocol
4) Type 110 in the port
5) Click on the open button at the bottom
The order of these is important, since it will change the port number again when you choose a protocol. The order given is correct.
That should pop up a terminal window that connects, or a dialog box with any errors. What exactly are you seeing?
