I have very limited experience with Linux and all of the jargon that is used with it just confuses me. I have used Ubuntu before but it was off of a Live CD. What I want to do is run a version of Linux off of my USB thumb drive. I have no idea where to get any programs for the OS, nor do I know which programs are good/bad. Can anyone recommend a particular Linux for me? Has to be pretty easy to use and whatnot and good for a beginner like me. Thanks.

Ubuntu is the way to go.

Any good Open Source Windows apps could be available for Ubuntu too (check out some tutorials about how to use add/remove software to, erm, add/remove software.)

Not sure about running it off a USB stick. (Because normally your USB stick should do the booting also.)

Oh Dyne:Bolic is also cool and can start boot off CD then continue boot from standard windows drive with the Dyne folder from CD copied to PC. Works also from USB stick I guess... but startboot (if not installed) happens from CD.

Could you provide a link for Dyne:Bolic?

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.
