Favorite Internet Browser::User Poll

Ok I wanted to see what internet browser people enjoy the most and which ones they hate.So post as many browsers you like but put them in the order you like them.Also next to it put a reason why you like it or hate it.For example....

  • FireFox-The "Downthemall" plugin and how easy it is to customize it.
  • Opera-Speed Dial, Flash and Grafik blocker
  • Internet Explorer-I hate it, it sucks.

Do it like that if you want to. Now since I only posted 3 browsers we can assume my last choice is the one I hate and middle my next choice, etc.

Ok...
  • FIREFOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Easy: Addons and is OSS
  • Epiphany (but didn't tried it yet) - Seems good from what I heard
  • Opera - Because it is really standard compliant and... It should be more native (I know it isn't OSS)
  • Konqueror - because if have no option unless for this bloated browser: it is OSS
  • Safari - last resource, it isn't OSS and isn't system native, having the worst font smoothing ever!
  • Internet Exploder - Just make his homepage http://crashie.com/ and nothing to add

Blue is everything.

too bad FireFox can use the trident engine (lot's of 'IE only' stuff on the web :(). IE stinks in general use, but for the things that Windows forces you to (I hate updates), you have to. This guy that wrote Vista Timesaving Technics for Dummies suggest to use Firefox for everyday use, but IE for emergency things and updates. (He hates M$ too ;)).

Trident

Firefox can use the IE engine. Just install the IE Tab extension. Smile

I don't get why everyone hates Windows updates. The concept is hardly specific to Windows. All decent Linux distros are patched constantly, too.

Huh?

They open what in IE nowadays? Windows Update? Vista doesn't even open a browser window to update (it has its own applet for it), and you can always go to windowsupdate.com manually for XP.

And if you're talking about IE Tab not working: It works fine for me.

I almost forgot......

I also like opera because you can set it to reload at a certain amount of time, which is usefull if your on this site a lot because then you know when someone posts something when the browser automatically reloads.
Also I like firefox because you can get that "Savesession" plugin which is cool, and opera can do the same thing, or that might only be opera-usb.

Firefox because of

Firefox because of extendability. I hate it's slowness though, so when I use a slow computer or don't have time / don't want to copy PFF to hdd, I use Opera.
I also use Maxthon sometimes, I like it more than Opera, but it's barely mobile (works, but doesn't save anything).

Who doesn't? I think that only people who don't use Vista. Like my brother on his second PC that I sometimes use.
Today I had to install 1 application. In order to make it work on user account, I had to type admin password ~20-30 times. Great, I would feel secure if I didn't know that it's often possible to bypass UAC...

Umm. Set your account as admin, then. UAC is just as secure with a full admin account. Then it just prompts you without asking for a password. That was the purpose of UAC--you can run as an admin without every program you run having admin privs. And the elevation prompt can't be bypassed by software because it runs in a seperate desktop.

rotfl. UAC is almost useless with admin account. It can be bypassed with code injection. And working as admin is just insecure (I don't care, but I'm not the only one to use this account).

The prompt itself can't be bypassed because it runs on a separate desktop. So code injection would only work if the code is injected into an already-elevated process. And in that case, that would be true with a standard account, too!

It doesn't matter that Vista

It doesn't matter that Vista shows it on separate desktop when you can make it not show at all because all code that requires some rights is executed by a process which has them (like Explorer or IE).

Yes, but in XP I would select all files and add myself full control. With Vista, Security tab doesn't appear when you select more than 1 file. And I found no way to make files inherit folder rights.

  • You can send more complaints to M$ with IE
  • What if it's your only choice and your SF.net boss would fire you if you were didn't email him some important server files?
  • It's secure, but not by default
  • IE is a part of Windows Explorer.
  • Though M$ says that FF is less secure because they fixed more bugs :P.

IE is a part of Windows Explorer.

Not anymore as of IE7. They've decoupled IE and Windows Explorer ever since IE7 came out. Install IE7 on XP and then if you type an address in the address bar in Windows Explorer, it opens an IE window instead of recycling the folder window. Same in Vista.

Edit: What the heck? I closed my cite tag... and yet the whole thing is still italic?

Not because of that!

I don't hate IE because of its look. I hate IE because of his glitchy rendering (Passes Acid 2? Firefox 3 passes.) and the dirty way MS made him come into the market (does un-installing IE trough the Add/Remove Windows Components makes more than removing desktop shortcut?).

Plus, IE has a hole lot more severe security bugs than Firefox, Opera, or any of the big knowns; and the implementation of ActiveX is wrong as no app should control our PC trough a browser!

If you don't like the quick find feature in FF you can search the web (too lazy to do that now) for an about:config key that changes the quick find to a popup window (I think, if not, search for an addon).

And... have you already though of adding </strong></em> to your sig Wink Biggrin

ActiveX

Everyone harps on ActiveX and I don't get it. Installing an ActiveX control in IE is no different from installing a plugin in Firefox or Opera. You think plugins like Flash and Shockwave run in a sandbox? In most cases they don't; it's executable code just like any other DLL or OCX. Sure, it used to be possible for websites to silently install ActiveX controls, but that hasn't been true since like before XP SP2.

Just to prevent:
About bugs, I don't mean more bugs than FF, but I mean a relative bigger amount of severe bugs. And the IE bugs take more time to fix and release to consumers.

Why

Why do you hate Firefox quick find? You tap the slash key and you can find what you're looking for, and then just press the keyboard shortcut to find the next, whereas IE it's only Ctrl+F and then OK... OK... OK... to keep finding that I'm aware of.

IE Rules

1) IE. Why? Its on all windows computers, very easy to use, and you don't have to install or download anything for it to work
2) Firefox. Ok, i do use it on my slower computer. Thats only because it dosn't freeze up the computer. But there are alot of improvents that microsoft has already made that could benifit firefox
10) AOL. OMG. AOL is a memory hog. I only have it because my mom sometimes uses it.

Do you know what you say?

Are you nuts? IE has the most broken engine of ever. It does not correctly support W3C guidelines, that are officially used worldwide; it is full of bugs; it is a resource hog (you just don't notice it because it is always open as Windows Desktop)...

Firefox/Opera/Safari/anything that doesn't use IE engine are way better than IE, and I advice any of those or others above IE.

Calm down

Remember, you can't just hate it because it's from M$. They help us with very advanced things (like MSDN).
Personally, IE works great for me until about 4 months into using the computer. Then it crashes a lot (probably from all those reg entries). Think about it this way:
Firefox is open source just because NetScape wanted its browser to live. If M$ was weaker, then FF would never exist...

Don't worry

I'm calm.

But from a web developer point of view (at least a minimum point of view) the IE 5/6/mostly 7 rendering engine has lots of glitches.

For example, what should be needed to make a footer with CSS I have to add 3 more lines of CSS for making it to go to the bottom, and I can't add borders anymore.

And I wont even talk for making a png image use alpha opacity on IE6 or older.

Go Seamonkey

Though Gecko (to be fair) has some errors, the best thing you can get is SeaMonkey why? Because it can do anything you need to on the internet. It's a suite in one package and definitely saves space on my USB. If only I could get ChatZilla to connect...

3) People called it AOHell for a reason ;)

I am a former AOL user I know exactly what you mean.

self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path

2) Firefox. Ok, i do use it

2) Firefox. Ok, i do use it on my slower computer. Thats only because it dosn't freeze up the computer.
Shock
I do it the opposite way. I like FF more. But on slow computers it's just unusable. IE and Opera are the only choices there.

1. Firefox. Don't get much

1. Firefox. Don't get much aof a chance to use it lately, not being able to install it at home, but I do fire up the fox portable every now and then Sad .
2. IE7. just because of tabs, and the fact that it is installed at my school.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Yeah

IE isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. I actually like IE7 in Vista, but it's not portable. FF3 is nice, though. I just wish they would fix the bug with PRE tags stretching the page (or is that really a Drupal bug that just wasn't visible in the less standards-compliant FF2?).

Yeah, multiline <pre> blocks appear to stretch the pages here to infinity and beyond. Even at 1280x800, I have to scroll forever when it happens.

1280x1024

I'm at 1280x1024, and shouldn't this be posted at mozillazine, or shouldn't John fix this, as the future is in Firefox 3. There will be plenty of early adopters with Ubuntu 8.04, as it is the default browser.

Wait, they're distributing FF3 with Hardy? Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but including beta software with a stable OS release (especially one that they're going to have to support for 3 years) doesn't seem to be one of the smartest ideas ever.

True

It's true, I think so too. I'm risky and don't mind, but they should think of the other people. They should have Firefox 2 as default (or any gnome browser) and, if they wanted, make a update for Firefox 3 when it was available.

At least, for who wants, version 2 is available on the repositories.

I Agree Completely

It just doesn't make sense. 8.10 is only like 4 months after the official Firefox 3 launch anyways. I don't see why they couldn't wait.

Anyway

Here is a temporary fix while Firefox or PortableApps.com (the one that is wrong) doesn't get fixed:

@-moz-document domain(portableapps.com) {

pre {
  max-width: 50em !important;
}

}

Use the userContent.css or Stylish for running this and adjust the max-width property as it suits better for you (I tried percentages, but, even though it was changing the size of the pre tags, it didn't change the size of the comments containers themselves)

--------------------

I think it is a problem with Firefox as it seems to parse incorrectly the % values.

In the CSS of the site, the width value is of 95%. That should be 95% of the content div. But Firefox seems to interpret that value differently, making it 95% of something a lot bigger.

Blue is everything.

Actually tabs in IE 7 suck

Actually tabs in IE 7 suck for me as I use non-standard settings and IE doesn't support them. Interface takes more space then necessary and the whole thing is slow.
I use IE 5-6. Even though they are much less secure I find them better.

Firefox - FOSS, fast,

Firefox - FOSS, fast, cross-platform, addons and custom UIs
Opera - Simple interface and built-in chat
Internet Explorer - Loads slow, can't stand using and the most obvious reason of all: Microsoft made it.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.
