Duplicate desktop application conflicts

Hi All,

The problem I have now is that I have the same applications on my host machine as on my USB HDD.

This means that when I double-click a file/document the application on my host machine is executed not the portable app.

Initially I thought of uninstalling all the apps off the host machine but this is probably not a "murphy" compliant solution.

This also brings me to another point. Is it possible to make a small change in the "Help, About..." screen to show that it is a portable app?

Once the programs are running it I find it hard to tell whether it is the desktop application of the portable application that I/was started.

How does one get around this problem/keep track?

Regards
Paul

Prevented

Most of my portable apps check to see if the local version is running and won't run if it is to prevent conflicts (FF, TB). The others will do so in the next revision. So, for these apps at least, it isn't a problem. Apps from other places, I can't speak to.

Some apps, you could mod the about screen, but it would require you recompile... or hack the EXE with resource hacker. Other apps, like the Mozilla apps, you wouldn't be allowed to do this and redistribute them.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

default app launching

Hi John,

The situation w.r.t. the duplicate apps I was referring to was slighly different.

For example, I start Portable Open Office, then use File Explorer to browse to a file, then when I double click the file it opens another copy of desktop Open Office which will not be setup with my preferences, for example.

PFF is ok as once it is open all apps will open pages within a tab or a new window.

However, should I click on an HTML file on my USB HDD and PFF is not already open, it will open FF on the desktop if that is set as my default browser.

I thought of changing the file associations but that would mean that if the portable apps are not plugged in, XP will not know what to do.

Paul

Yeah, not recommended

File associations are a thorn in the side, but not a huge deal. Just use File-Open in a given app. Taking the file associations of the local machine is just a bad idea (what if it crashes... or doesn't correctly set things back... not to mention the fact that it simply wouldn't work if you don't have admin rights). The other option would be to have an explorer-like app that was portable that knew your portable app associations within it. I've looked at this a bit but haven't had time to fully explore it.

Perfect

Now that would be perfect!

I'll go and add a few items on the wishlist of PC Commander. If they have a wish list Wink
