Sandisk U3 Smart Drive

Hi,

I have a Sandisk U3 Smart Drive with U3 Software Central installed.

Is possible to use PortableApps and U3 Software Central at the same USB flash drive? Is there any problem with that?

Can I put PortableApps Applications running on U3 Software Central or U3 Software running in PortableApps Suite?

Thanks

No

You can use them both on the same drive without problems. I do it and its easy. But you cant have the U3 programs appear in the PortableApps.com Menu. There is a way/hack to make non-u3 programs appear in the menu here.

How about REPLACING it?

I have a PNY thumbdrive with U3 on it and I was wondering if the PortableApps Suite could be used to simple REPLACE the U3 interface? I'm not concerned with the U3 apps working with it, because pretty much all of the software I have is from PortableApps.com. Smile

Better yet, just uninstall U3 entirely and install PAM on it. Smile

That's what I want to

That's what I want to do...Uninstall U3 completely and have PAM autostart whenever the thumbdrive is plugged in. I've "effectively" disabled the U3 Launchpad so it doesn't start up, but I can't get PAM to autostart...even after editing the auto.inf. Sad

I have found the uninstall program to get rid of U3. After I do that, I'll try out the other suggestions. Thanks! Smile

PAM wont ever completely

PAM wont ever completely autostart, at the most it will bring up the autostart dialog and allow you to select which action to perform. The reason U3 was able to start on insertion is because it used a fake CD partition to trick the PC into thinking a CD had been inserted (CD's can fully auto-run, most other external media cannot)

Except within vista, I've heard. I haven't had time to check though, but I believe this future has been rendered mute. You now have to click to start it.

Correct - Autorun is being ditched

Vista no longer allows CD/DVD drives to autorun without asking the user. I had heard that XP Service Pack 3 was going to do this, too, but I haven't checked myself.

Everyone should be disabling autorun for security reasons. The CD autorun is what Sony used to sneak malware onto Windows PCs using audio CDs.

Does anybody have a good link for this? I seen it talked about often, but never with a link.

Yeah, which is a good thing... and makes U3's fake CD partition not only superfluous, but annoying on Vista. Plugging in a U3 drive results in TWO autoplay windows, generally with the drive's autoplay on top (so you have to close or move that one before you can launch U3).

Putting PAM on a standard drive (or U3 drive with U3 removed) is a much cleaner solution. Smile
