Exactly HOW do you try to

Exactly HOW do you try to use it ?

My guess from the limited information you gave is that you used Windows Explorer to select a *.pdf file, and double clicked to open it.
That uses "File Associations" to determine that Adobe should be used.
That is NOT what you should be doing.

You need to Launch the Portable Applications Menu and select and open Sumatra.
If this gives you Adobe instead of Sumatra you have a really sick P.C. in desperate need of a format and re-installation of everything !!!

Assuming you open Sumatra, on top left corner click "File" then "Open" and that gives a browser with which you can explore your system to find the file you want to display.

Another approach is "File" then "Make SumatraPDF a default reader". This was intended by Sumatra to alter File associations so that a Windows Explorer double click would no longer use Adobe, but would prefer Sumatra.
This should work with NORMAL INSTALLED Sumatra.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR A PORTABLE APPLICATION - I have limited knowledge but believe the intention of Portable software is to leave no trace of its use on a P.C., so altering File Associations would be a violation that might be blocked, and if not blocked it might have unfortunate consequences - but there are many others on this forum who could advise you far better than I.

Alan.

yes

thats how it works.
You can configure Sumatra as a helper app though.

No, it isn't

No, it isn't. A PDF reader is supposed to open PDF files. Like any document viewer. Adobe Reader happens to also include a browser plugin that lets you view PDFs inside the browser window. Unfortunately, it's a bit slow and takes up a lot more memory (Adobe will continue running until you close your browser). You're better off configuring Sumatra PDF as a helper app (as linked to in the other comment) so that when you click on a PDF it'll open up.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
