ad-aware sucks now. it was good at the dawn of spyware but it never kept up. as far as free antispyware programs go, the best are Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, Windows Defender, Spyware Terminator and Super Antispyware. (not sure about Super Antispyware, because i've never used it but i know the others are good)

Edit: btw, how are they at version 8? it went from ad-aware 6 to SE to 2007, so the next should be 9

I'm sorry that you don't

I'm sorry that you don't like Ad-Aware. I use the full version of Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster and SpywareGuard and Ad-Aware still seems to find some spyware. Granted it's only Tracking Cookies but I think that I can afford to set it to auto-scan every couple days while I sleep.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.

Spybot S&D

There is no contest that the absolute best spyware program out is Spybot Search and Destroy. Their definition files are updated weekly and even thought you can't schedule a scan (I don't think) it has been the most effective application I have found for removing spyware and malware.

Spybot S&D sometimes detects

Spybot S&D sometimes detects malware that actually isn't malware. For example, if I didn't examine the results of my last scan, I would have removed SpyHunter, my anti-spyware program.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.

SpyHunter = Not Good

"While there are still unresolved allegations that SpyHunter transmits the Windows Product ID from users' PCs (1), we can no longer classify this application as "rogue/suspect." Nonetheless, SpyHunter -- at least in its current state -- cannot be recommended because of its mediocre performance as an anti-spyware scanner. Testing indicates that it does not recognize some well-known spyware installations and has difficulty removing critical spyware/adware files even from those it does recognize (1). Given the many excellent competing anti-spyware applications that are available (some for free), users would do better looking elsewhere for trustworthy anti-spyware protection." ( http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm#sh_note )

The list needs a bit of updating, but there is much more here.

I recommend Spybot S&D, Ad Aware, Spyware Doctor, and Spyware Terminator. (Although I do agree about Ad Aware not keeping up...)

I use Ad-Aware 2007, Spybot S&D, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Spyware Doctor, ClamWin, KeyScrambler and the Immunization feature in Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal. Never had any issues at all.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.

I use SpywareDoctor, the built in Windows firewall, and a router(no firewall built in) at home and have never had an issue.

The year I lived on a college campus, no matter how many daily/weekly scans i did with avast, avg, SpyBot, AdAware, pest patrol, counterspy, or any other tool (never had more than 1 active scanner running at once, but had all installed to do frequent scans)...that year i had to reformat my harddrive 3x due to really nasty viruses, and spent probably a total of 2 full weeks running virus scans trying to clean things up in situations that didn't require a reformat. Least secure network ever, no matter what I did my pc got infected with something

Well I also use Windows

Well I also use Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, but I didn't mention them before because I consider them as assumed software. I have a 16GB USB Thumb Drive and on it is a collection of Setup files for various programs so that if I get a computer that needs fixed due to malware infection, I don't need to download the programs. I even have some of them installed directly to the Flash Drive so that I don't even need to install them on the computer. The apps on the drive are for diagnostics, benchmarking, malware removal, multimedia programs, optimization and cleaning tools.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.
