It takes nearly two minutes for me to be able to use OpenOffice after I start it. Granted, I do run it on USB 1.1 at work, but even so. Is there anything that can be done to reduce the loading time?

USB 1.1 is *horrendously* slow. And OpenOffice is the biggest app. That's your issue. There is not way around it besides upgrading.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
That's what I was afraid of! I use the computers at my university (with the wonderful "guest" rights) and they've still got USB 1.1. That and they're still using 400 MHz machines...
I guess what I really want is to start up OpenOffice with the Writer part, but not the others, since I use it more than anything else. Other than opening up a blank document, is there anything I can disable, such as plug-ins and whatnot, that might speed things up a bit?
OO.o is OO.o. You can use the INI file and add -writer to the AdditionalOptions line. Read the readme.txt in the PortableOpenOfficeCode directory. It won't really speed things up though.

What about the Writer that appears to be a seperate download from the OO.org site? I assumed, based on the fact that it's file size is smaller than the suite, that it was just the word processor alone.
Where do you see it as a seperate download?

try abiword instead, it loads faster
@ John T. Haller: I saw it on their FTP site, apparently the modules as seperate downloads. It was a very long time ago (two years), and I wasn't interested then, so I didn't give it much thought. I doubt they'll have the same thing now, though.
@ rekun: I like AbiWord, and use it most of the time. I simply need a text sort feature (apparently, me and about three others in the world need it) now and again, and AbiWord doesn't have it. OpenOffice does, but it's slower than yesterday at loading!
Yeah, that was 1.1. 2.0 is a very different animal.
Why not just type em in in alphabetical order A little old fashioned sorting.

I do that, actually - enter a space between the two entries where the new one goes, and start typing. Problem is, what if I make a mistake? I have to fire up OO.o and sort the text, the copy it back. It's not a big deal, and certianly not enough for me to not use AbiWord, especially considering that my documents have a level of security because my whole university is pro Microsoft, and MS Word doesn't open AbiWord docs very well. Only other thing I'd suggest to AbiWord (and have, through their forums) is to let me customize what gets displayed, e.g. toolbars and buttons.
I would like to point that you can buy USB 2.0 extensions for your PCI slot in your computer, it shouldn't cost much
Embrace your dreams
The upgrade to 2.0 is cheap. And helps *A LOT*. Unfortunately, the original poster is stuck using university machines outside of his control.
