I myself now have 3 file managers in my computer, temporarily.
Haven't decided which one to keep or delete yet.
I got:
a43
2x explorer
vapor
I think a43 and 2x are portable, but I don't know the entry thing. OTZ
a43 is good, but not support some asian characters(unicode?).
2x explorer seems ok. not find anything wrong yet.
VAPOR, I can't find any info about it.
It's included in a shell software called Sharp-e.
You have to open the installed dir to find it, cuz it seems not the standard component of Sharp-e.
Vapor is a file manager and web borswer as well.
There's a button to switch.
To the manager part, it has some features exploere doesn't have, like cmd, file filter, and pic preview integrated.

The other two file managers I'm paying attention to are explorerXP and explorer2(2 is superscript).
They are more powerful than the three above, but I haven't tried them yet, cuz they need to be installed.
Explorer2 is the latter of 2x explorer, and have pro and lite versions.
So what do you guys think?

So far, the only file explorer I've ever used was freeCommander, and I liked it -- but I couldn't find any others that did what I wanted.

I use the registered version of EF commander. All future updates are free. And it is quite portable too (you only have to copy the INI file with settings into the program directory)
Looks EF commander is popular.
Is there any portable file manager you guys recommend?
I am using SpeedCommander (http://www.speedproject.de/), which can easily be made portable.
how do you change speedcommander to english?
Directory Opus is definitely the best filemanager for Win. It can do almost everything and is configurable to no end.

You should have a look at Total Commander. I've been using it for a few years. It has a ton of features and loads of plugins. There are instructions on the site on how to make it portable.
I use TotalCommander, very useful with tab interface
Yes the tabs are very nice. One thing that bugs me is that it hangs when accessing network shares with alot of files in a directory. This can get very frustrating. Other than that I love total commander.
