Could you clarify your request.
Are you asking for a StandAlone Flashplayer [e.g., not in the browser] that can play downloaded .swf files?

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
if that's what he was asking, i looked into gnash not too long ago and it has a zip file to use but it still doens't work too great with some things like games; i think it plays movies fine. it's still in beta though and i'm sure it will get there. there are many offline flash players out there but i think they require you to have the flash plugin; gnash is an open source recreation of flash
Actually Adobe has a stand alone player.
The problem is you have to have a high speed internet connection to get it. It is in a huge archive.
Something like 65 MB if I recall.
The file itself:
flashplayer9r124_win_sa.exe
is only 3,316KB
But again, I'm not sure this is what the poster is looking for.

doesn't VLC media player play flash files?
have one. It's what I use to watch youtube videos I crib.

it does ... Not
Actually when you download a movie from youtube you download a .flv (flash video file) not a .swf (shockwave flash file).
I think VLC plays .flv(s) but not .swf(s)

Oliver,
Just checking, you're agreeing with me? Right?

Yes, VLC play .flv files, among many other things.

a flash video or a shockwave flash? Sure, VLC does the flash video, but for shockwave flash, I have .swf open up in my ffp browser. It's how I play my 3dTetris offline.

The 'official' standalone Flash Player (But it's not portable)is available here and is actually meant as a debugger. Click on the 'Download the Windows Flash Player 9 Projector content debugger' link or here (Direct download)
I know that it creates some file associations and puts data in
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player and probably some other places, too.
A launcher for it might be possible, but it would take a lot of work.

portable app creator might handle it for a bit

I'd seen that before but wasn't sure what the debugger version does and how it is different from the non-debugger StandAlone version.
A launcher would be a good idea,
Why do you think it would take a lot of work,
in the sense of anymore work than any other app??

The debugger version helps with debugging if it's enabled in the file you're trying to play.
I really don't think it would take more time than any other launcher

I saw this on portable freeware, but haven't tried it though.
SUPER (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer) is a tool for converting one multimedia format to another. It works even on IPod and mobile formats. It currently supports 3GP/3G2, ASF, AVI, FLI, FLC, FLV, , MPG, MOV, MP4, OGG, QT, RM, STR, SWF, VIV, VOB, WMV, AC3, AAC, AMR, MP2, MP3, MP4, OGG, RA, WMA. See here
Mabey this will solve your problem.
That only works if the swf file is a video or animation which doesn't involve any interaction. Flash games etc. can't be converted.
But it might still solve the original poster's problem.

the Firefox portable support page. Halfway down there is a category titled "install
plugins." It gives a link to a flash player extension for Firefox.
It still leaves a lot of traces on the host computer (Hey, is it possible to fix that?).
Personally, I would love to see a lanucher for that standalone version (So I can play Linerider and keep my tracks everywhere. :P). At least it's easier to control than the browser plugin.
