Would anyone be able to tell me why I might want to use AbiWord in place of Open Office Writer? I already have open office installed on my thunbdrive and do not have any storage space issues.

They are very different programs overall, though, in many ways, they seek to perform the same function. AbiWord is very much a lightweight word processor. It provides most of the functions that normal users need in a word processor. It's quick to start and simple to use. OpenOffice.org is more the full-featured office suite. It provides much more of the niche functionality that is needed by some word processing users. It's slower to start and a bit more complicated to use those features... but overall it strikes a good balance between functionality and ease of use.
You're fine with Portable OpenOffice.org, but I'd urge you to give Portable AbiWord a try as well. You may find something you like in it. And, being portable, it's a no-risk trial that you can just delete if you don't like.

John,
Thank you for your quick response. I am having a lot of fun trying these new apps on my thumb drive...I tend to bounce between home, work, my folks and some friends computers, and these programs will allow me to have a setup I have been wanting for quite a while.
I do have to ask...as popular as this site seems to be, do you get to answer these posts yourself? or do you have a team that helps on your behalf? Also, are you self sufficient, or in need of donations (paypal)?
Thank you for your time and efforts,
Clayton Fitchett

Every time you see a post from this account, it's me. The site doesn't have any real revenue yet, so it's funded by donations, the Google ads and my wallet.
Glad you like the site.

Personally I use both Abiword and Writer next to each other.
Abiword is a favorite when I have to borrow a pc for a few seconds and write an .doc file asap... Writer is used to work on heavier projects.
