optimisation registry programmes

http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ hi i found these tools for backing up ' restoring your pc and optimisation u'r pc. these programes are free and portable as far as placing them onto a cd goes im not sure if you can put them on to another drive but i just wondered if someone could get intouch with the person who made them and discusse that possibility as these would be of benefit to the collection here. let me know what you think. also the creator might be intrested in joining the crew here as right now they only have a very small website. and last but by no means least, i found this link via a registry cleaning product and theres opposing views on that subject so i'd like to know what everyone here thinks about them. cheers cdj59

"i'd like to know

"i'd like to know what everyone here thinks about them"

While in particular cases removing a registry entry can have some value,
In General "Registry Cleaners" are OverRated, Useless, and At Times Dangerous Sad

"theres opposing views on that subject"
I think you can guess what view I'm siding with Wink

think i agree

think i agree as ive used a couple myself and ended up with progams not working but some say theres a few that are safe '' ccleaner for example '' but the link ive provided would suggest that youd need something else before using any of them. so id like to know if anyone could reccommend one thats tried and tested before i try any free or otherwise. ps what does anyone think about maybe including those safety tools ive linked too? .

This particular one isn't actually a cleaner

it is an optimizer, by which it means that it will create a clean new registry hive file containing ALL of the keys from the old one, without any of the cruft, or blank spaces that have built up in it. More like defragmenting your disk than like erasing unneeded files.

I tried it once, on a user registry file that had grown to over 9 Mb, which was causing delays at login for the user in question.... it wasn't particularly seccessful though, didn't shrink it by much.

I'd say that these, like pretty much all registry manipulating tools, are firmly in the category of "only use them if you actually need to".

If you're not experiencing errors or problems that are directly attributable to registry issues, then leave the registry alone. The potential for damage is truly scary, unless you manually check (and understand the impact of) each change suggested by the tool. And if you don't understand the changes, there is no short path to that knowledge (though google can be your friend)
