Hello again all!
I have a slight problem using PFF and PTB sometimes and I thought I would propose a solution here.
My problem:
Every time I use either PTB of PFF, they end up with profile differences than my local copies. As I generally use the Portable versions most often, and always use PTB to check my e-mail first, this is a minor problem, but with TB and FF being default apps on my WinXP box, it can get slightly annoying having to sync them every time I need something in a portable but am using a local copy.
My idea:
Liberta is coming along very well, and I like the new incarnations of the apps, although I've only viewed the cosmetic aspects of a few and not the actual functionality or Sync and Backup (hmm, a thought: might sync do this now somehow, and am I wasting my time? *Oh well* I've started and might as well finish. I'll check afterwards. Damned 3:00am bleary eyed posts.). But is there a way to automatically sync PFF and PTB profiles to local? It could be an apps in an autorun.inf, or an app that starts with pstart.
Possibly, it could have a configuration file to set paths:
output=X:\My Portable Applications\Internet & E-Mail\PortableFirefox\Data\profile
input=C:\Documents and Settings\Jacob Richards\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\l8tllr93.default
The file could be a one time setup, and the apps can run in background.
Now, this doesn't seem very useful for PORTABLE APPS, does it?
Well, it's not supposed to be, really. It's kind of something to use to sync PFF and PTB to your primary computer (home or office or wherever) without a lot of hassle.
So I come here for you're help.
I know a little VB.NET, but have no Copy of it, and can't afford it right now. I'm taking C++ this coming fall, because it seems like it will be MUCH more useful, and then I'll be able to get a free copy of MS Visual Studio 2005 through the MSDN academic alliance. But that's months away. So I ask you kind coding wizards to help me out, and to help the other people (there have to be some) who use multiple computers frequently, but have one main computer they like their portables in sync with. Once I get into coding, and I'm reviewing some material now to get a head start on next semester, I'll try to help you all out.
So come on C++ coders, and NSIS script wizards, let's make some magic.
Note: I thought I was starting to get a handle on NSIS, but it's more complicated than I thought. Of course, It's usually the wee hours of the morning I play with these things, so that might explain some things.
Note 2: I realize this is a very long post, and rambling, but forgive me, I'm an insomniac, and caffiene, Turner Classic Movies, and CNN can only keep me so alert after 36 hours. I think it's about time to sleep
Sync does what you want, almost. To make it automated you'll just have to wait a little bit longer for Libertà AutoStart, which should help you do just what you want!
Yours
Steve Lamerton
Why not to have a sync buttom somewhere in PTB?? I believe it will be faster and quicker to use.
Methinks this is not possible.
As is, PFF/PTB are portable as the original apps (slightly modified, very) wrapped in an NSIS scripted launcher to eliminate local save.
What you propose would require Mozilla to add that in to Firefox and Thunderbird themselves. John doesn't code those (well, he might contribute, I know hes active on MozillaZine). He builds upon them to make them portable. I doubt Mozilla Corp. would modify them for a few avid portable appers, although this movement is growing.
As a sidenote, I think they should actually hire John to do this kind of stuff. I'm sure they could make money off it somehow. (Yes, I am something of a John T. Haller FanBoy, I guess. What can I say, his apps have helped me VASTLY, and saved me quite a few buckaroos.)

Usually if I have a problem I start to work it out both way, so why not have a sync buttom in the PFF/PTB which sync on the main application into a main computer??
I think that John Haller instead of being hired by Mozilla Corp. he could start his own company offering good software at a reasonable pricing, here in europe there's a good market which seems to be just opening.
The whole point of Mozilla FF & TB is it's open source and freeware. I meant that they should hire him in a portablizing capacity, as a consultant or something similar, and I'm sure he could make some good recomendations to improve a basic Special Firefox from Mozilla for portabelizing.
As it is, I doubt John feels like coding his own Mozilla variants for a niche group, when he can easily portabilize existing OPEN SOURCE (i.e. FREE) apps with an NSIS Scripted wrapper. Thats why an autosync app would be good. Less overall hassle. It's easier, and It's probably a damned sight quicker, too.
Maybe a FF or TB extension could do something like this, though. Something to think about.
Hell, I'll just wait for the Liberta main module doohickey release to bring it all together. Steve sounds optimistic about it being able to do this. Reminds me, got to read up on that main prog. I don't want to lose PStart to just ANYTHING! And I think its gonna have a laucnher!
I kid I kid Steve.

Good idea, presently, since my time most of the day is fully busy,sometime I lose the point of some matter; Anyway a tray icon for sync could be a nice solution, I will try it asap and come back. Tks
You want me to do it, or will you?
I could possibly send you a pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha of the sync icon since I am/was doing the icons. Or I could send you the main icon if it's OK with Steve.

If you could make an icons for the sync it will be a great help for me, when will be OK for Steve.
Thank you
I`ve got icons for all the modules. However, they arent ready so I may just have to send you the main one.

I'll publish it on the Libertà SourceForge project as 'Sync (with tray icon)' once I have everyone's permission.
