App list error

I noticed that NUV and KompoZer are repeated once in development, and once in internet. Also, even if the programs are based off each other, I think they should be listed seperatly. Also, why do we link to XAMPP if it isn't from PortableApps? Actually, we only provide a LAUNCHER!!! Yes, a launcher.

Menu Integration: XAMPP isn't in PortableApps.com Format, but it easily integrates with the PortableApps.com Suite by using the XAMPP Launcher 1.3 and installing XAMPP in the root directory of your portable device (as recommended).

Why are we hosting a launcher on PA?

.

XAMPP is portable.
use the launcher discripted when you get to its page, to add it to the portableapps menu.
and XAMPP is already portable so we dont have to do anything.

It's John's desision. If he wants it on there, he puts it on there.

"PortableApps" Wink Keyword there.

Na na na, come on!

Yea..

They belong to multiple categories. They're development tools used to edit and create internet pages.

Many people use and love XAMPP, myself included. It's always recommended to install XAMPP to the root of a drive, it provides quick and easy access. Putting in the PAF is a neat idea as somebody told me they have in mind. But really, as dbdii407 said, it's John's choice. I personally find it a good one. Trust me, if you had use for it, you would not be complaining, nobody else has.

It's not an error, the apps

It's not an error, the apps can fall under multiple categories. I agree each should have it's own line though, instead of grouping "NVU and KompoZer" together all the time. As stated with Mac-On-Stick, it's John's site, he can link to whatever he wants. XAMPP is at least open source. Why is it such a big deal that John provide a launcher but not a full package? Also, PA isn't hosting a launcher, PortableApps.com is. John asked that we stop using PA as an abbreviation because it really isn't descriptive at all, and because PA.com is a domain registered to P/A Industries.

Nvu

Personally, at this point, I think for the next KompoZer update we maybe just get rid of Nvu. KompoZer is starting to exceed Nvu in some better features, so although Nvu was the official one, I think we just go with KompoZer from now on. It's like having to upgrade to FileZilla 3 despite the loss of some features.

Just my input to John.

Also, just a note. If we do end up keeping both, I think they should remain on the same page and line. KompoZer is really taking over development of Nvu. I heard that Nvu was going to be started back up again but at this point I really only read that KompoZer is the new route.

Ugh.

No need to get all religious about the name. What next, we have to start referring to FFP as "Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition" in all contexts? It just doesn't make sense to enforce things like that in casual conversation. Amongst ourselves, "PA" or "PA.com" is sufficient to indicate what we're talking about.

If I were talking to someone unfamiliar with the site on the other hand, I would indeed refer to it as PortableApps.com to avoid confusion.

Chill

John's asked us to write it PortableApps.com, or even portableapps.com would be fine. PA.com and PA can cause confusion as new users do read the forums too. It's no biggy, and like 10 extra letters.

Umm

The real PA.com (P/A Industries) isn't even in the same category as PortableApps.com, so the chance for confusion is low. And I would probably use the full name with a new user anyway, a few times, then I would revert to the abbreviation. I'm certainly not going to keep using the full name if I refer to it multiple times in the same post.

Like I said, what's next, asking everyone to write out the full name of FFP "to avoid confusion"? After all, it could stand for any number of things.

Don't misread my tone; I'm not really upset or anything. The "possibility for confusion" thing just seems kinda paranoid is all.

PAF

If it is open source, why don't we just PAF it and host it on sourceforge?

as Patrick said a few

as Patrick said a few comments up, "It's always recommended to install XAMPP to the root of a drive, it provides quick and easy access."

XAMPP Portable - in PAF

I'm the one Patrick's meaning. I made a PHP script originally to do it, and that was probably over two years ago. I've been working with my own copy of XAMPP Lite in PAF ever since. I'm working on the NSIS launcher; it's currently going well, but I'm a bit busy at the moment, so it may take a week or two more (don't quote me on that one!).

Changes to default config:

  • Move XAMPP documents (originally in htdocs) to Documents\XAMPP. I've been looking at having it configurable by the installer (another path page), but I think that I'll just make it an INI option for Development Test 1.
  • For all of the files mentioned in install/xamppbasic.inc, replace their paths. I'm chopping off the drive letter in the launcher, so that it only has to change it if the path on the drive changes. One problem with this that has occurred to me is that this will ruin UNC paths - so I'll need to check the first two characters - if they are "\\", then I can't split the first two off.
  • Move MySQL's databases to Data\mysql.
  • I don't believe that I can move Apache's config files. But I'll check.

But it's not all as simple as that...

I hope to present you soon with XAMPP [Lite] 1.6.6a Portable Development Test 1!
