I've just posted an experimental Development Test of OpenOffice.org Portable Light. As was discussed in the recent OpenOffice.org Portable 2.4 Pre-Release topic, this package is designed to leave out most optional components that take up the most room like: help, UNO-Python bridge, non-English dictionaries, fonts (except OpenSymbol, which is small and required), etc. By leaving all the above out, we end up with a much lighter package with most of the functionality. For comparison:
OpenOffice.org Portable 2.4: 82.3MB download / ~242MB installed
OpenOffice.org Portable Light 2.4: 58.5MB download / ~111MB installed
IMPORTANT NOTES AND CAVEATS: It is important to keep in mind that this is currently considered *EXPERIMENTAL* and may not be supported going forward. It is likely that it will be rolled into the standard OpenOffice.org Portable installer as an option in a later release. You can not upgrade an existing OpenOffice.org Portable install to this package nor will you be likely able to upgrade this package to a later release. This version will install in an OpenOfficePortableLight directory by default. It will appear with the same named icons as OpenOffice.org Portable in the PortableApps.com Menu at the moment (so it's best if you either use OOP or OOP Light but not both... which make sense since they do the same thing)... in the current beta, the regular icon will show up before the light icon, I believe.

I like this idea because I don't use OpenOffice Portable very much, so the thought of it taking up so much space just makes me not want to install it on my flash drive. I don't know if it is possible or not, but would it be a possibility to make the installer more customizable? For example, let me choose to install only certain aspects of OOP, such as only the word processor, database and spreadsheet portion. That would be useful, unless someone knows of a portable Spreadsheet and/or Database program so I can just install them along with AbiWord Portable.
Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with Windows.

There is only ONE OpenOffice application, which has several different displayable front ends depending on the name it is called by, and the file it is editing. Within the actual program, there is no separation into a word processor, a spreadsheet, etc. All you can remove is some support files, that come to a few tens of kilobytes per unwanted function, which is really negligible on a 250Mb application.
What is the UNO-Python bridge for? Is it essential for parts of OpenOffice to work? I've been using OO.o for awhile now and never paid any attention to it.

I've downloaded this twice, the checksums match up, and when running the program, there are 4 errors. It says StartModuleWindowState.xcu, GlobalSettings.xcu, StartModuleCommands.xcu, and GenericCommands.xcu are corrupt in folder /OpenOfficePortable/App/openoffice/share/uno_packages/cache/registry/com.sun.star.comp.deployment (split) .configuration.PackageRegistryBackend/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/ I can still start OO.o, but I don't know how this will effect it. I don't know if this is because of some of the components were removed or if there is something wrong with the installer. Also, does this version require Java to be copied?

I've just downloaded and installed this, and got no such error. I've looked in my installation at the files that you mention, and within the installed area, while the first part of the path that you list exists, the final five folders are simply not there - it stops at registry, with no sign of data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/
Secondly, and I suspect the cause of your problems.... mine installed into OpenOfficePortableLight, not into OpenOfficePortable.
Did you by any chance install this over the top of an OpenOfficePortable install? The TLP definitely states that it won't work if you do, and that is the only way that I can see that you would end up with the full package name, and, likely, the extra UNO files, since UNO isn't part of the light build.
Edit: I should add. I've had a quick play with the light version, and I can't easily get it to break. I've not checked portability, but standard file viewing and editing of my documents is good, so it looks good so far.
I did a fresh install of it to my desktop, so I didn't install this over an old version. I too agree that those folders aren't there, but I still get the error messages popping up. Is this maybe because I installed it to my desktop? Also, anything about copying Java over?
Most likely, your path is too long. OpenOffice.org does *NOT* work with overly long paths or paths with special characters (dollar signs, etc). The launcher attempts to calculate this but it may be missing it in your specific one.
Keep in mind this is generally meant to be installed to X:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortableLight not to C:\Documents and Settings\My Awesome Username\Desktop\PortableAppsTemp\Office\OpenOffice Portable Light 2.4 Test\OpenOfficePortableLight

The built in gallery of images / sounds are IMHO not worth keeping. I would suggest deleting:
App\openoffice\share\gallery
From a quick test, this doens't cause any problems (e.g. From missing Bullets- degrades gracefully).
Anyone know the purpose of the images in :
App\openoffice\share\config\symbol ...?

I like having the smaller version, storage isn't a problem but I prefer simpler. I noticed on the light version, the default icon style remains regardless of the selection. Thanks for all the applications you make available

John, I've trimmed my installation of Open Office24 lite down to 76.4 MB and everything still functions. I have read the many comments & feedback about the waste of time and effort to try and remove the extra files for unwanted functions. However space is definitely critical on a small laptop that I have open office on. This laptop is very low spec (112MB ram, 533 crusoe processor & 10GB drive) and used only when I travel. Open Office is used for opening MS Office files and to save them into my preferred formats for a much lighter word processor & spreadsheet. I want to remove all the files relating to Base, Draw, impress & Math. Can you advise a list of these files. Regards - Steve Gutry

Thanks, but you should know that Tiny USB Office wont open office files and that Google Docs wont work if you are off-line and is useless if you are stuck on dial up (which happens sometimes when you travel). The other point that you folk should think about is - why do so many people keep asking the same question - how to trim this package further.
so you can split out the apps, you'll need to talk to the OpenOffice.org people. Believe me, you won't be the first, and probably not the last.
Back in the mid 1990's it acutally used to be separate apps, but it was all merged into one for version 4.x. Back at the time, splitting it again rapidly became one of the most frequently requested features (I know, I was one of the requesters), but it never happened. I seriously doubt that it ever will, now.

I thought you meant what he did to shrink it from a local install.
The 76MB is the installed size. I did a html list of the installed files in a program called Directory Lister. The Html file is about 20KB in a zip file. If you are interested, I can email it to you. The files are already shrunk with UPX and can not be shrunk further.

Frankly, I think the light version should be considered for becoming the default portable version. Most of the stuff that was removed, I can't imagine people want or need on a portable version. And OOo is likely the largest portable app here. Even with cheap thumb drives, some people have old drives, and some people just don't like wasted space.
I'm also curious if this could be trimmed down even further. Someone here claimed to trim it down to 76 megs, but instead of listing what he deleted, he emailed me a list of files still left in his folder, which was thousands of files.
After pain-staking efforts to match his file list, my version wouldn't run anymore.

When I stripped version 2.4.1 further, I basically started by removing all language files apart from english, all dictionaries, icon packs (apart from the default)etc. I then started deleting everything that looked unnecessary until the program broke. If it broke then I just restored those files from the recycle bin. Out of interest I have stripped 3.0 beta 2 down to 102 Mb.
I'd like to see this move out of beta and be among the standard applications offered. I use Abiword instead of OOo due to size issues (even though I have a 2 gig flash drive. go figure._ But it'd be handy to have an excel clone, etc on there. Since 2.4 is going to be outdated soon by 3.0, I was hoping somebody could continue this line of development.
