john, why dont you just enable a little button in the user account controll that will enable you to change your username. this will take a lot less effort than individually changing people's unames as well as the fact that it will stop the annoying "Can i change my name" posts because they may not be annoying now but wait until it catches on and you are faced with 500+ people wanting to change there name.
" ...why dont you just enable a little button"
and if there is not a little button to be enabled?
People should not be able to change their user name at the drop of a hat.
First, it would get very confusing.
Second, it could be abused.
[If you can't imagine how, then you are a truly simple, naive, and wonderful person {and I mean naive in its most positive sense } ]
The offer to change usernames was for developers who would want to be credited in and identified with the apps they helped create.
It was not a general invitation and John should not be being bugged about it.
Just don't pick a name you haven't thought about.

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Any body who's not doing anything nefarious would tell you what they used to call themselves. I know I would.
It was not a general invitation and John should not be being bugged about it.
No, I know, I didn't receive an invitation, and I have put at least a month of thought into this decision, Seriously And with all due respect I am asking John.
Just don't pick a name you haven't thought about.
I did think about my name! I would like to change my mind. Should we really not be allowed to change our minds? Is the security risk that great?
Second, it could be abused.
I agree with the abuse comment but that can be limited. Yahoo mail has a feature that any extra mail addresses can only be changed twice a year. And I'm pretty sure spammers can be tracked. Look at the tracking feature on this web site (User Profile), I can follow you! It does not change with the name, I looked.
self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path
sort of off-topic but related to this comment I am replying at: I originally kept my username as a decided choice, but when the opportunity appeared I liked the idea of using my real name and though I could apply (I translate... and... those stuff...), but now that I see my name hasn't changed, and I better though of that, I would like to keep my username ()that is in use. The developers to who I translate can keep my real name in their apps, but I will not identify by my real name, but by my username from now on again.
I was primarily addressing the request for a user controlled "little button".
1. I do not think Drupal has this capabiity.
2. I do not think John would use it even if it did.
3. I do not think John is going to hack Drupal to allow it.
That being the case,
"Can i change my name..." "...are faced with 500+ people"
Comes into play. This places the burden on the MetaMods/Admin.
My intent was to give quick and early support to John for the decision I think he will make so he does not look like the lone bad guy.
I have no feelings about your wanting to change your username.
I do think that a private e-mail to John would have been a better way to go as someone replied 12 minutes later that they wanted the same thing.
I am a member of 4 similar groups and none of them allow users to change their names at will. I'm betting there's a reason for that. In fact I've never heard of a newsgroup that allowed users to change their username at will.
Best regards,
Tim

A year or so ago, there was actually a "username" box on the Account page that you could change. It disappeared a few months after I registered, but it was there.
I agree. John's got a lot on his plate. Maybe one of his Capos could take this on, but really, what's the difference whether you change your name or create a new account? As long as you don't delete the old one, all your old posts should be kept.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

If you could change mine to Benjamin Cahill, thanks.

BTW, i like my name, no change needed!

Yea John, is there a way to do this?

Blue is everything.
My reply was not addressed to you.

Thank you, makes since. I still want to change my name but I'll deal with it

I would rather have John focused on keeping PortableApps moving forward, not changing UNs.
Go ahead, "boo" me.

All your old posts won't be in your new name.
And furthermore, the forum guidelines specify multiple accounts is not allowed. (though I botched that up slightly unintentionally a while back :P).
Patrick, you mean not allowed. (I didn't reply so you could change it. Even though you're a mod )
Haha, thanks, I do that often somehow, and it really does cause confusion.
in Patrick-talk: "...and it really do cause confusion"
"and it really does cause confucism"
Lol, mispelling causing change in religin
