I'm putting up a thread so we can discuss the apps to include in the next release of the PortableApps.com Suite. It's the same as the old thread with some modifications. All versions include what will be referred to as the PortableApps.com Platform (menu, backup, custom icons, autorun). The Standard package currently includes:
- ClamWin Portable (antivirus)
- Mozilla Firefox - Portable Edition (web browser)
- Gaim Portable (instant messaging)
- OpenOffice.org Portable (office suite)
- Sudoku Portable (puzzle game)
- Mozilla Sunbird - Portable Edition (calendar/task manager)
- Mozilla Thunderbird - Portable Edition (email client)
The Lite version (which I think I'm going to call Light from now on) swaps in AbiWord for OpenOffice.org to save space.
In the 1.1 release, I'd like to keep it to that same setup, although we'll be using Pidgin instead of Gaim, of course. (On that note, the installer will be removing Gaim and porting the settings to Pidgin.)
I'm going to add Mines-Perfect to both the Light and Standard as it's only 800k installed and is fun.
I think adding Sumatra PDF to both makes sense as it is only 1MB and it's quite handy to be able to open PDFs.
I think adding KeePass is a good idea as it's only 1.5MB and a secure password manager is kind of a must.
I'll be adding in CoolPlayer+ as our small media player.
And I'm thinking about adding in PNotes so we have a simple note-taking app in there as well.
Keep in mind that these are just simple apps that are designed to apply to 90%+ of the folks out there. So, while apps like Notepad++ are useful, they're not for everyone. Same with Command Prompt Portable, Virtual Magnifying Glass, etc.
As this is essentially an English package... all apps that have optional translation on install (Pidgin, AbiWord) will be installed without them.
Oh, and the updater will be coming later... it's too early to include it yet.
Thanks,
John
This is a work in progress...

That actually looks like a good list to me for Light and Standard. As for Ultra, i'd suggest including all games, 7-zip, and InfraRecorder as well.

I think Ultra = all Apps we have.

that would make sense lol.....

might be unnecessary, because everyone could select the amount of download by themselves. That would concentrate the need for constantly updating, maintaining, supporting to a small number of standard suites and, at last,
with the ultimate suite containing all present and future apps you have a big download and longtime install - remember all the complaints on stalls and waiting longtime for the install of the standard suite on slower PCs and drives..
I´d prefer a strong effort on getting the updater out...;)
oh and I agree to your suggestions on the standard and lite suite...

Dont forget to make a warning/message about that so people wont come here asking: "What happened to my beloved Gaim and whats that new Pidgin-thing for?"

Would you be adding the Firefox 3 Beta 5 to the suite or will it still be the Firefox 2. I think, the beta one is superior. The old one has more compatible add-ons but slowly every add-on is trying to be compliant with the beta one too. A trade-off!
My vote for the Beta though.
I would guess, a lot of people use the firefox browser and a lot in that lot use the beta one. So, why not make it a part of the suite.
Hope that makes sense.
He'd use FF2. Including beta releases in something like this suite would probably not be the best idea.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
I agree, it is beta but it is more stable than the V2. I still think, Beta 5 should get a chance in the sweet suite![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
that I fully support it, but both Ubuntu 8.04 & the latest Fedora release have 3 Beta 5 as default...
Yeah, I think it's a bad idea myself. But I think Ubuntu did it because it's a long term support thing for this particular release.

Please understand, I am not trying to be pushy at all but,
Can I know what are the problems having a beta in the suite. The final version of firefox is expected to be released this June. Will the suite get updated then? Just asking out of curiosity.
Why I am concerned more about this is, the browser is ONE-OF-THE most useful apps. And, Firefox 3 is arguably the best around. So, why not include the best in the suite?
Ubuntu & Fedora did it. Probably, they were convinced enough that, the beta was stable enough to be included.
Anyways, I am 100% Ok with what ever decision is made as long as John helps us by portabl-ing the latest releases of Firefox
![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Just my thoughts.
Well, a beta is never intended for end-users to use. It's for testers. That's why it's a beta. I believe Ubuntu did it because this is one of their LTS (Long Term Support) releases and they didn't want to be stuck with FF2 for that long. Fedora did it because Fedora isn't a product for end-users... it's for geeks who may set it up for some end-users.
If we bundled FF3 and our users start asking why their favorite extensions or plugins don't work. Why such and such commercial portable app no longer works with Firefox Portable. We wouldn't have a good answer.
We'll be keeping the Suite up to date regardless of Platform updates from here on out.

Thank You for the reply,

what is the difference between 'Others' and the 'Kitchen Sink'?![Wink](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/wink.gif)
On a more practical note it looks good to me![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
im guessing Others = "some apps not listed currently" and Kitchen Sink = "everything"
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
the Suite installer having a components page - e.g., you download the full "Standard" package, but can choose which things to install.
I don't believe that 1.0 had that.
Edit: Will the kitchen sink fit inside a USB disk? Try the Firefox about:kitchensink extension!

You could include SeaMonkey in the light release when 2.0 comes out it has a smaller footprint compared to Firefox & Thunderbird together. Just a thought for the future, I know SeaMonkey 2 is a long time off.
You can also add a "Dev" version with just the development apps.(Notepad++, etc.)
self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path
I really think that there should have everything in the package and then a selection menu like the updater.

I would like to see the app to remove the drive included. It's only about 305KB and saves 3-5 mouse clicks on average to get one's drive ready for removal.

Also, I find Foxit PDF Reader to be portable and better than Sumatra PDF.
I know it's almost unanimous that Foxit be on our list, but it can't be done. The license disallows us to include it.

By GAIM do you mean Pidgin? Isn't that what the open source community calls the most up-to-date version? If you're not referring to Pidgin why would you put in the old version?
Be sure to read carefully, and not just glance at the list.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
The Standard package currently includes:
* ClamWin Portable (antivirus)

1) Add 7-Zip Portable or PeaZip Portable to the Standard and Ultra packages.
2) Add a VLC Portable or MPLayer Portable to the Ultra package.
3) Add FileZilla Portable to the Standard or Ultra package.
4) EDIT: Add InfraRecorder Portable to the Ultra package.
5) Rather than adding everything to the Ultra package, create a Complete package that has everything. This would especially be the case with the addition of very large, esoteric applications. I am thinking that XAMPP (29 MB), GIMP Portable (35-75 MB) and Poker TH Portable (18.4 MB) for example, should be in the Complete package, but not necessarily the Ultra package.
6) If adding the additional the Ultra package, consider renaming the Ultra package to something less extreme, such as the "Advanced" package.
well, alll people i know in person prefers the webmail before the thunderbird program, so i think that it might be out the light suite. my idea may be for:
Light Suite:
Firefox
Pidgin
7-Zip
Abiword
Sumatra PDF
The 2 lightest games
Standard suite:
as it is, maybe with vlc instead of coolplayer
Ultra suite:
As John says, at the more efficient program of each class, maybe with:
Virtual magnifying glass
KompoZer/Notepad++/XAMPP (only tried kompozer, can't make a solid decission)
Stellarium
All games
Gimp
Firefox
Thunderbird
Pidgin
WinSCP
Audacity
VirtualDub
VLC
GNUCash
Sunbird
OpenOffice.org
PDFTK
PNotes
SpeedCrunch
7-Zip
ClamWin
CMD
Eraser
InfraRecorder
JKDefrag
KeepAss safe
LightScreen
Toucan
WinMDSum (unless you decide to include the downloadthemall for firefox, & even i'll include it)
Winmerge
Each of KompoZer, Notepad++ and XAMPP are for different things:
So maybe just including Notepad++ with the other 2 as a possibility
OK editing it
EDIT: can't edit my last post i'll post it well written here
Light Suite:
Firefox
Pidgin
7-Zip
Abiword
Sumatra PDF
The 2 lightest games
