When I close the browser it is not on the screen anymore but it is still under the tasks in the Task Manager. Only a hard "End Process" terminates the program. This is the same reason why a cannot delete plugins even after several restarts because for FireFox the browser is always active.

I have XPSP2 and I have no problem with PortableFF
have you tried with clean instalation of PortableFF ? (no extensions, no themes)
also if you use Cache in Firefox and got USB 1.1 it will takie some time to clean it ...

It can take up to a minute to fully close after closnig the window if you have a slow drive (some USB 2.0 drives use poor components) or connect via USB 1.1.

I too am seeing firefox last and last under tasks\processes. I will wait longer however. But my real problem is portablefirefox taking up 99% of cpu usage. I've disabled 99% of the extensions, and switched to default skin, do I need to do more?

while it is rewriting paths and stuff. But if FF doesn't start and PFF.exe stays at 100%, something in your profile is hanging it.

With PFF 1.5, startup isn't slowed down as much since the storage structures of Extensions changed. I do recommend starting with a fresh profile for FF 1.5, whether portable or regular, to get the cruft out.

Ok, I believe I found the hangup. With Googlebar, (not Google's official, the third party extension), my Gmail checker shot my cpu usage way up. So far I've installed over two dozen extensions, no problems with the cpu. Now, as far as it staying forever in the task manager, you may try File\Exit instead of the close buttons, it cleared pretty quick with exit. It doesn't stay active for near as long now that I took Gmail off my Googlebar. Thanks John.

I figured out the real reason, I copied my whole profile folder from my desktop version of Firefox. If I only copy the extensions, I can load as many as I want, no CPU usage, and no hang ups. The fixes I figured were working were just flukes. Anyway, everything is smooth now, just didn't realize the two profiles would be that different.
