Pretty new here, but PAs are totally changing my life for the better! I've got a DiskGo 256MB USB watch and a OCZ Rally 1GB. At first I thought the watch (10mb/sec) read might be too slow. However, all applications I need basically run the same spead (once tweaked). Sorry to digress, just thought I'd let people know before they buy expensive USB drives.
What I would like to do is the following: have a launcher come up automatically everytime I plug in. I would also, like to have the drive either encypted (does doing this on the fly slow performance?) or at least password protected?
Does anyone have such a setup? If so any advice would be appreciated.

You can use TrueCrypt (get the Zip version) from a USB drive, but some users here have pointed out ways in which it is not "truly" portable. TrueCrypt will let you make an encrypted file which is mounted as a drive, or if you partition your USB stick you could have hundreds of MB encrptyed as a "device hosted" TrueCrypt volume.
However TrueCrypt needs admin priveliges to run, unless an admin has already installed the required TrueCrypt device drivers. And some systems will refuse to mount new volumes that weren't present during the login process.
You can also use a mix of autorun.inf and a batch file to run TrueCrypt with command line parameters, so in an ideal setup it could auto-mount the file/partition you create, so you just get asked for your (huge & secure) password...
I have PStart set up to do the following:
(1) Upon starting, it automatically launches the TrueCrypt partition including how it auto-sends a password. TrueCrypt assigns it the proper letter and automatically quits after mounting. I is almost immediate and has no lag.
(2) I've augmented the above setup so that PStart also sends it my password so that I'm not hassled. Less secure? Yes, but anybody seeking the password has to know where to look to find my password. I also can turn off the autostart, in which case I use a special key combo to immediately load it at will. Very simple, very quick, and more secure than normal.
(3) Upon quiting PStart - I use a special hotkey to do this - the secure drive is immediately ejected. I can also use a HotKey combo to just eject the secure partition. If only I could find out how to auto-kill all running programs and auto-unmount the entire USB device.
The way I've set it up is very quick, very convenient, and very secure as long as you don't have PStart auto-send it the password. The advantage over a batch file? You get PStart running in the background, and HotKeys to unmount/remount/open the secure partition with great ease.
I can post the exact specifications if people are interested.

If you have a spare moment I'd really appreciate details of your mount/encryption set-up. My 68 year old brain now has a bit of a problem working these things out for myself.
