hMailServer request for conversion to potable app

Program: Hmailserver

License: hMailServer 4 and earlier versions are licensed as open source under the
GPL license. Later versions of hMailServer (version 5 and later) are still
free of charge but closed source.

Description: hMailServer is a free e-mail server for Microsoft Windows. It supports
all the common e-mail protocols (IMAP, SMTP and POP3). It also has
support for virtual domains, distribution lists, antivirus, antispam,
aliases, distributed domains and much more.

Website: http://www.hmailserver.com/

Other: Typically E-mail data is stored in a database server, MySQL or MS SQL,
depending on your choice but the software can install MySQL automatically
when you install hMailServer. (Ps.. these has been successfull running of
this software in Linux via wine so its use as a portable app should be
straightforward)

uhhh, why?

First of all, the requirement for an installation of MySQL will be a significant issue. MySQL on windows installs and runs as a service, so you will almost certainly need admin rights to get it to work at all on a machine, which significantly limits portability.

But, second, why do you want a portable email server? I'm really not sure how much use this would generally be.

If you want it for SMTP, then almost any place that you plug it in will be blocked from direct sending to remote mail servers, since most/all cybercafes, dialups, broadband IP blocks are in the RBL lists so cannot send except through their local ISP SMTP servers as smarthosts.

If you want it as a local POP/IMAP server, then I'm not sure how you would get the email into it in the first place, unless you are also updating the MX records for your domain every time you move to another portable PC.

I agree with you, some what!

hi

"MySQL on windows installs and runs as a service" this is the larges problem that i can see, however most web servers require SQL in some form, espeshally if they are using PHP. so i cannot see that being the best argument against development.

plus Hmailserver is probably the best and only totaly free email server on the web which is so ease to set up a novice can do it in under 20mins.

and yes i know neather of these is a suficiently good reason, but may i just say this; portable apps is not only for portability, it go`s far more than that, its easy of use as well!.

look at Freenass (http://www.freenas.org/), the network assined server that runs from a usb stick, or easylivecd server (http://easylivecd.com/english/emailserver/)
an email server that can run from a 128mb memory stick or cd.

with the aid of bartpe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BartPE) and portable apps software similar compilations can be designed for specific tanks. but within the windows enviroment!..

anyway i have made the my case,, it over top you..

thank you for your time.
