Forum Reorganization

I think it's about time we did a forum reorganization. Especially now that we're bring on more and more apps. The one forum per app model just won't work.

So, we're left with a decision.

One "PortableApps.com App Support" Forum - One big app support forum where people can ask questions.

Category Support Forums - Broken down by category based on our app categories (Accessibility, Development, Games, etc).

Category Support Forums w/ Big Apps - Same idea but keeping the individual forums for the big apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org). They'd be arranged to appear just below their category indented.

Whatever we do, we'll recategorize the current posts. And redirect the old forum landing pages.

I'm inclined to do the 3rd option... thoughts?

Numba 3

Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice.org are always busy. We would want Firefox and Thunderbird topics bumping down Internet topics for something like PuTTY within just a couple hours.

Search Links

I was also thinking we could add search links so people could click a link to see, say, existing gnucash questions in the support forum

I really don't see anything else working.

I Agree

Sub-forums would be cool.

#3 = subforums...

Isn't that what #3 is, essentially?

Yeah, but SubForums are cooler.

I'd say that #2 w/ subforums would be the best.

Made Up

Subforums are really just a made up thing. It's just another forum indented below the main forum. A forum by any other name.

So, yes, they will be indented below the forum they'd normally be a part of.

Number 3

I certainly agree that number three would be best.

Three's a winner.

I also like the "search links" idea.

For the Development forums, how about an indented "Tips and Suggestions" forum where developers can share helpful findings and code snippets? When a solution is found to a problem discussed in the regular Development forum, folks can suggest that it be added to the T&S (or whatever it should be called) forum. In the T&S forum would be a clean problem description, the solution and a link to any discussion thread(s) that spawned it. Probably better as a wiki, but a forum would get off the ground faster. Number

3, but what do you define as a big app? Using forum posts Toucan is high (below OO, FF, TB, Pidgin), personally I would prefer it having its own forum, especially with 2.0 on the way, but if not, oh well Smile

If #3 is the solution,

I think there should be some requirement that in the Other Apps Support Forum you have to put the name of the app in the title to make it easier to browse.

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Would tagging be possible

Is tagging an option?

It will allow a user to tag his post with the appropriate app (putty, FFP, etc.) and type of post (question/request/tip/announcement, etc)

This should make searching/sorting the forum much easier to only see the relevant posts.

When re-organizing it would be easy enough to add the taggs. It would also take care of the number of the current postings which are in the wrong forum to start with.

Paul

Great idea!

...if Drupal supports it. Search usefulness is usually greatly improved by a priori tags over randomly abbreviated and misspelled keywords in a free-text field such as the Subject.

Of course, if said tagging isn't an option, the "descriptive Subject" admonition may slightly reduce the number of context-free "please help!" topics.

2 + sub, else 3

I'd go for 2 if there could be sub-forums, otherwise I'm going for 3.
