"How To" guide needed

Hello everyone,

I'm new to using PAM and have no real coding experience whatsoever (except tinkering with .ini's and such).

Now I am starting to like and use the Portable Apps system more and more and I'd like to add some of my own content. To try around, I am currently trying to 'portable-ize' my Red Alert installation. There is just one problem: I can't find any instructions, and if they _are_ around, they are (too) hard to find.

At this moment I think I completed the file folder structure and everything else, except for the "AppNamePortable.exe" part, wich I really don't know what that consists of, how to make/edit one or how to get one made.

I'm eager to learn, so please teach me.

Regards,
pindab0ter

Well,

Here are some links:
The Draft of the PAF Specs: https://portableapps.com/node/12851
The Unofficial Beginner's Guide (needs a lot of work): http://cubegames.net/development/beginners
The #portableapps IRC chat room http://mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&nick=ANewbie&channel=%23porta... (you get a lot of help there.
The summarization of portablizing is to basically do whatever you can to make sure that the settings get saved to the data dir (with a few more things)

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

A step closer...

Thank you for your post. I already read the Draft on the PAF specs globabally and used some of it's information before I posted my first question. I now installed NSIS (portable pre-release), but the beginners guide doesn't link to the example scripts, so I don't really know what to do. Could you give me a (link to an) example script that I could modify so it'd work for my program?

Look at one of the launchers

Look at one of the launchers that handles what you need. How does the app store its settings?

Exactly my question!

Well, you hit they nail on the head there! How do I find out? Is there an app that lets me read the contents of an executable? If so, where do I get it? (and is there a portable version? I'm working on a public computer at the moment.)

Edit: I know some settings are simply stored in .ini files, but there are some registry keys required I think.

You can use things like

You can use things like regmon(sysinternals, not portable yet) regshot (search here) or you can use regedit(win r and regedit), start with regshot. I would check out the 7-zip and Keepass-you'll need to mix the two. What app is it?

Hehe

That'd be me I guess n_n

*installs regshot portable*

I'll be fiddling with this some in the afternoon I guess (my afternoon, I'm GMT+1, guess that explains something here, hehe)

@Oliver: I'm currently trying to portable-ize my C&C: Red Alert install for personal use and for practicing the process of making stuff portable.
