how to save the preferences correct?

hello everybody!

as a great fan of toe portable fox i'm using it very often. but i've got a problem with the settings - there are some errors i couldn't fix, and websearch only show me the way to this site Wink

my problem:
the browser-settings weren't saved.

i use PFF on an usb-stick, on computers with various BS (win2000, winNT, winXP ...). but every time i plug my usb-device on a different computer, all settings i've made are gone.

means: the toolbar looks like "default", my theme is away, different toolbars are shown which i didn't want to, browser-preferences are "default" and so on.

of course i can redo every change i made (meanwhile i'm very fast in it...), but hey - this could be no solution, eh? especially not, because of when i close the PFF and re-start it, every changes i made are gone again.

when using the stick on a single-one computer i just deleted the old one and created a new directory on my usb, made all settings, installed all plugins - and then i can plug and unplug as often as i want, everything's fine.

but like today, working on another computer, i'm sitting in front of a very messy little browser. ugly and _very_ annoying.

so, i hope you understand what my problem is, if you need to know my version or my used plugins, please tell me!

hoping for help,

greets & nice days,

sph

You ARE launching PortableFirefox.exe and not firefox.exe, right? If you are, then your profile is corrupt. Try closing Firefox, deleting everything in the profile directory (don't delete the folder itself, though) and run PFF again, then set up your preferences and see if they stick.

However, if you're running the program by launching App\firefox\firefox.exe, please don't. Running it this way causes Firefox to use the local profile, if one exists, or else it creates one. This seems to be the most likely explanation.

erm... of course i'm _not_ launching anything else than the PortableFirefox.exe Wink

but thank you for your idea with the profile-directory, i'll try this right now!

I know it sounds like a completely stupid thing to do, but I've seen a few people try to run PFF by launching App\firefox\firefox.exe and then wonder why it doesn't use their portable profile. I figured I might as well make sure.

thank you very much!

thank you very much!

i created a new profile-folder, now it works again. on different computers.
thanx alot! Smile

further questions:

if i have trouble again with this profile-folder, can i just delete the corrupted one and replace it with a backup-copy of the working one?
i made a backup of the current profile, i guess this could work.
and i guess i could have figured out this a little earlier, would have saved much time...

but, more important to me: why is my profile-folder defect every four weeks? and why does this only occur when i'm changing the workstation, not when i use the same pc?
i use this "secure disconnect"-function on windows, so i thought i could be sure not to mess up the data on the stick... o.0

Yes, you can backup a good copy of the profile and copy it back if it gets corrupted.

If the profile keeps getting corrupted and you're using safe removal, then it sounds like your stick is on its way out. It might be wise to replace it before it craps out completely.
